p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; } In addition to weak economic growth, the activity of businesses was handicapped by a strong euro last year. Global earnings by CAC 40 companies are down 2%, and down 3% compared with the comparable index, according to the CAC 40 Financial Profile published by Ricol Lasteyrie Corporate Finance. In addition to the effectis of perimeter (sales of assets and changes in methods of consolidation), the negative development is due to a significantly negative currency effect. Of the 26 companies that supply information, the impact of currency reduces global earnings by 2.5%, or EUR1.7bn, compared with a positive impact of EUR11bn in 2012. Organic growth, however, remains the same as in 2013 as in 2012, up 2.0% for this sample. Global profits are down 10%, while the operating margin has fallen from 8.2% to 6.9% (excluding banking and insurance). Write-downs took a toll on these results along with the evolution of exchange rates. Asset write-downs reached a record EUR23.7bn in 2013, bringing the total assets written off the books of companies in three years to EUR54bn. Unlike in previous years, write-downs affected corporal assets as well as goodwill. Three companies (GDF Suez, Vivendi and Anofi) represent 80% of this impact. Investments by CAC 40 companies were down 6% in 2013, compared with a 5% increase in 2012. This is the result of some prudence, and also shows the impact of a very steep decline (-23%) in investment in the technology, media, and telecommunications sector. At the same time, net debt to capital ratios stand at 33%, an especially low level. As of 31 December 2013, the market capitalisation of the CAC 40 is 1.37 times the total owners equity at companies belonging to the index, the highest ratio since the 2008 crisis. Only eight companies still have a market valuation below their owners’ equity, comapred with 13 at the end of 2012. However, at the end of 2013, the market capitalisation of the index had not returned to its pre-crisis levels. The rise of stock prices in 2013 represents the intrinsic performance of the CAC 40 less than the gradual dissipation of systemic risks in Europe.
