He was previously head of sales for offshore China at UBS Global Asset Management, in charge of sovereign funds and Chinese qualified investors in particular. Before that, he served in a variety of positions at FIL Investment Management (Fidelity), State Street, and Morgan Stanley.

The operation will allow StormHarbour, a firm founded in 2009 by two former Citigroup managers, to diversify its corporate advisory and trading activities serving the fund management industry in Asia. Under the agreement signed between the two parties, whose financial terms have not been disclosed, the CEO of Asuka, Mamoru Taniya, will become managing principal of StormHarbour, and will also direct the asset management division. In a statement, Asuka says that the transaction will allow it to take advantage of the international network of StormHarbour, and to gain rapid access to a wide spectrum to foreign investors. StormHarbour, based in New York, currently has 170 employees, and has offices in seven cities worldwide. For its part, Asuka, the Japanese affiliate of the US hedge fund Tudor Investment Corporate, founded in 1999, was taken over by its management in 2002 in a buyout operation.

Nearly one in five are domiciled in the Cayman Islands. The list for Germany includes 2,555 FFIs, while the United Kingdom has 6,264. The corresponding list for Liechtenstein is limited to 240 institutions, while the Cayman Islands have 14,837. From 1 July, the FATCA law will require foreign banks to inform the US authorities when persons taxable in the United States are among their clients and account-holders with over USD50,000. Establishments who do not respect the FACTA requirements may see their US income reduced by 30%, and may have their activities in the United States shut down.

The treasured license allows the London-based entity to invest in capital markets in China in local currency, including A-shares and onshore bond markets. The first RQFII license from BlackRock was obtained in March last year for its North Asia division, which received RMB2bn (EUR240m, or USD320m) in investment quotas in June. Thomas Fekete, head of the products team at iShares for the EMEA region at BlackRock, says in a statement that the firm is particularly “proud to be among the first asset management firms in London to be able to offer direct access to Chinese investments.”
