Le groupe américain Northern Trust Corporation a annoncé, ce lundi 20 février, l’acquisition des activités et services d’administration de fonds d’UBS Asset Management au Luxembourg et en Suisse. Les termes de l’opération n’ont pas été dévoilés. Cette transaction va permettre à Northern Trust d’accélérer son développement et sa présence au Luxembourg et de récupérer de nouvelles activités d’administration de fonds en Suisse, devenant du même coup un des acteurs majeurs de ce métier en termes d’actifs administrés dans ce pays, selon un communiqué. De fait, à l’issue de l’opération, Northern Trust va assurer l’administration des fonds d’UBS Asset Management totalisant environ 420 milliards de francs suisses. Northern Trust opère au Luxembourg depuis 2004 et « la transaction va faire rentrer Northern Trust dans le top 10 des administrateurs de fonds en termes d’actifs sous administration », selon un communiqué. L’acquisition, sous réserve de l’obtention des autorisations réglementaires nécessaires, devrait être finalisée dans le courant du deuxième semestre 2017, indique Northern Trust.
L’indice des fonds alternatifs au format Ucits publié par Analytical Research AG, le Ucits Alternative Index Blue Chip, a progressé au mois de janvier de 0,12% mais à la mi-février, la hausse ressort à 1%. Après un mois de janvier terne, la première quinzaine de février s’est mieux passée pour la plupart des composantes de l’indice, à l’exception des stratégies CTA qui accusent un repli de près de 2% à la mi-février, des stratégies de volatilité (-1,11%) et des stratégies devises (-0,30).En revanche, l’indice des marchés émergents gagne 2,93% depuis le début de l’année jusqu'à la date du 15 février, alors que l’indice multi-stratégie affiche un gain de 1,94%. L’indice event-driven, qui avait reculé de 0,20% en janvier, marque un gain de 1,40% sur l’année à la mi-février.
La société de gestion italienne Symphonia SGR, contrôlée par Banca Intermobiliare, vient de nommer Nicola Rossi en tant que président et Sergio Vicinanza en tant qu’administrateur délégué.Nicola Rossi a été conseiller du président du Conseil en 1998 et 2000, avant d’être élu à la Chambre italienne des députés, puis au Sénat italien. Il a aussi travaillé à la Banque d’Italie et au FMI. Dans le secteur privé, il a notamment été président du conseil de surveillance de Banca Popolare di Milano.Sergio Vicinanza a, au cours de sa carrière, été responsable de la direction CIB de MPS et administrateur délégué de MPS Capital Service Banca per le Imprese. Il connaît le secteur de la gestion d’actifs pour avoir été administrateur délégué d’Epsilon SGR à la fin des années 1990.Par ailleurs, Alessandra Viscovi, Massimo Paolo Gentili et Pierluigi Molajoni ont été nommés au conseil d’administration de la société.
Pictet Wealth Management a renforcé son pôle de sélection de fonds avec le recrutement d’Angela Perez-Palacin, a appris InvestmentEurope. L’équipe dirigée par Mussie Kidane, responsable de la sélection de fonds, se compose désormais de six analystes. Cette arrivée fait suite à celle d’Olivier Gugi, en provenance de Lombard Odier. Angela Perez-Palacin était précédemment stratège crédit senior chez Coutts à Zurich.
Bryon Lake, responsable d’Invesco PowerShares pour la région EMEA (Europe, Moyen-Orient, Afrique), a quitté la société de gestion, rapporte Citywire. L’intéressé sera remplacé de manière temporaire par Matthieu Grosclaude, directeur des opérations d’Invesco PowerShares. Bryon Lake, qui était à la tête de la région EMEA de la société de gestion depuis 2013, met ainsi fin à 11 ans de présence au sein de PowerShares, la filiale dédiée aux ETF du groupe Invesco. Selon Matthieu Grosclaude, cité par Citywire, Bryon Lake a décidé de poursuivre d’autres opportunités de carrière en dehors du groupe.
La banque suisse UBS a annoncé aujourd’hui le rachat par l’américain Northern Trust des services de reporting et de valorisation de sa filiale UBS Asset Management au Luxembourg et en Suisse. Northern Trust sera le prestataire de services d’administration pour les fonds d’UBS qui y sont domiciliés, qui représentent 420 milliards de francs suisses (394 milliards d’euros) d’actifs. Les modalités financières de l’opération n’ont pas été dévoilées.

Lieu de domiciliation d’une large proportion des fonds Ucits, la Place a aussi constaté un intérêt croissant des gestionnaires de capital-investissement, d’immobilier et de hedge funds depuis l’entrée en vigueur de la directive européenne AIFM. Elle espère tirer parti du Brexit pour attirer les gestionnaires d’actifs britanniques.

La mutuelle détient par exemple plusieurs participations en direct dans des entreprises non cotées, y compris dans des sociétés de gestion. «Nous pensons qu’il peut parfois faire du sens d’accompagner dans la durée une société, explique Roger Caniard. Nous l’avions fait par le passé avec La Française des Placements, nous avons donc décidé de renouveler l’expérience en prenant une participation minoritaire dans Convictions Asset Management en début d’année. En parallèle, nous sommes aussi un actionnaire historique de Tikehau.» La MACSF conserve également une stratégie plus traditionnelle dans le private equity. « Nous investissons depuis longtemps dans les fonds de LBO, confie Roger Caniard. Nous travaillons avec une dizaine d’équipes, essentiellement françaises, avec lesquelles nous avons noué des relations de long terme, ce qui nous permet aujourd’hui de réaliser des co-investissements.» Une stratégie que la mutuelle souhaiterait encore développer à l’avenir.

Among the participants in the fund are sovereign funds, public and private pension funds, endowments, foundations, and family offices. Engagements for all Dyal funds taken together now total over USD8.7bn, from 160 international investors, which strengthens the position of the firm as a specialist in investment in stakes in private equity or hedge fund companies. The objective for the third fund is to supply capital to assist companies to achieve their strategic objectives. The fund is expected to acquire stakes in 10 to 12 private equity firms. The fund has already made six investments, in Vista Equity Partners, EnCAp Investments, Silver Lake Technology Management, H.I.G. Capital, Starwood Capital Group and KPS Capital Partners. Dyal Capital Partners has already invested over 50% of the fund.

This result is far below the previous month, when gains had totalled 1.15%. In January, the slight increase in interest rates drove down bond returns, particularly for bonds in foreign currencies, into negative territory. However, as in the previous month, both the Swiss equity market and real estate investments were able to earn positive performance.

It becomes the first European ETF to top USD20bn in assets under management. This is taken as proof that investors feel ETFs are appropriate vehicles to participate in the renewed optimism in US economic outlooks. ETFs dedicated to US equities have posted net inflows of USD19.3bn in January alone, according to statistics from iShares.
The California pension fund CalPERS, with assets under management totalling about USD310bn, has announced that it has approved a new strategic plan for the next five years, 2017-2022, whose implementation will begin on 1 July this year. The plan is centered on five major objectives, including the long-term sustainability of the pension fund, reduction of complexity, taking risk into account in organisation and promotion of personnel with strong performance who meet diversity requirements.The long-term sustainabiilty obejctive will include attention to coverage rates, which it is hoped will not fall beneath 50% for 30 years, through maintaining expected volatility of 8% or below, and taking ESG criteria into account for 100% of assets.
The growth of assets in defined contribution (DC) pension regimes last year continued to exceed the rate for assets in defined benefit (DB) regimes, with the former now representing more than 48% of assets in pension funds worldwide, up from about 41% in 2006. Assets in defined contribution regimes have risen at a pace of 5.6% over the past 10 years, compared with only 2.6% for assets in defined contribution regimes, according to the most recent figures in the Global Pension Assets Study from Willis Towers Watson. Among the seven largest markets (these seven countries, accounting for 91.7% of the assets covered in the study, are Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), Australia has once again seen the highest percentage of assets in defined contribution funds as compared with defined-benefit assets, with 87% of assl assets in pension funds in DC funds.Last year, assets in institutional funds worldwide in 22 major markets (Germany, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, South Korea, Spain, the United States, Finland, France, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) increased to a total of USD36.4trn as of the end of December 2016, an increase of 4.3% in 12 months. Total assets in pension funds in these countries amount to 62% of their collective GDP.The study also finds that assets in pension funds rose by an average of 3.8% per year (in USD) over the past five years, with the highest rate in China (20.3%), where the study covers the enterprise annuities market, while the lowest rate was in Japan (-5.4%).

As of 31 December 2015, assets totalled EUR158m. This is the result of inflows of EUR61m over all of last year. The FCP Actions 21 has doubled in size to a total of EUR50m as of 15 February 2017, compared with EUR23m as of the end of 2015, after inflows in 2016 of EUR13m. Since the beginning of the year, it has brought in EUR11m. The other fund, Immobilier 21, has seen its assets increase from EUR128m at the end of 2015 to EUR137m as of 15 February.

The three funds in question are ALM Actions zone euro ISR (EUR1.5bn in assets), ALM Crédit euro ISR (EUR884m), and lastly, the FCPE ALM ES Actions euro ISR (EUR39m). The SRI label is issued for a period of three years, and aims to give increased visibility to SRI products for savings investors. It distinguishes funds which invest in businesses with good governance and responsible social and environmental practices. “The asset management firms for labelled funds are required to have put in place a methodology and adequate resources for analysis and also to take into account the results of this analysis in the construction of their portfolios,” AG2R La Mondiale says. Agicam, which has been present in the area fo SRI for 15 years, has a dedicated team composed of three specialists in the analysis of ESG (environmental, social and govnernance) criteria, and five SRI managers for its range of SRI collective invetment vehicles (OPC) covering the major asset classes and management strategies. “This range had capital of EUR9bn as of the end of December 2016,” AG2R La Mondiale states.

In addition to OFI AM, the consortium also counts Alliance, Groupama, RCI Bank and Services and the startups Belem, Scorechain, Stratumn and Utocat among its members. In addition to Caisse des Dépots, the consortium now has 26 participating banks, asset managers, insurers, mutualist insurance companies, startups, industrial companies and associations. LaBChain, launched by Caisse des Dépots in December 2015, aims to be “a laboratory of innovation dedicated to distributed register technologies, in order to mutualise the avenues of exploration and collectively anticipate the opportunities and impacts of this rupture technology, primarily in the fields of banking, finance and insurance,” a statement says. The initiative also aims to support “the development of the French blockchain ecosystem by organising work around partnerships between large groups and startups.”

The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Pontus Noren, co-founder of Cloudreach, will become CEO of the firm, while Dave Johnson, senior adviser at Blackstone, will become chairman of the board of directors.

The asset management firm now has 11 UCITS strategies aimed at investors, it says in a statement. The Emerging Market Equity fund, launched in december and managed by Dreihaus Capital Management in Chicago, has raised USD145bn. Meanwhile, the Driehaus US Micro Cap Equity strategy has raised USD25bn. Heptagon has also announced a new partnership in international long-only equities with WCM Investment Management, a firm founded in 1976 based in California, with USD15bn in assets under management. In January, Heptagon and WCM launched a UCITS fund with USD20bn, which replicates an international equity strategy managed by WCM with a total of USD1.5bn in assets under management. The portfolio includes 30 positions, selected with a bottom-up approach. Heptagon has also recruited two personnel for its London office, to assist in commercial development serving institutional investors in the British and European markets. Michael Daly joins the asset management firm as vice president, after serving for five years at AllianceBernstein. David Bloch, a family office specialist, has been recruited as an associate.
La Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec a annoncé que le mandat du président et chef de la direction, Michael Sabia, est renouvelé pour une période de quatre ans, soit jusqu’au 31 mars 2021. Elle indique que conformément à sa loi constitutive, la nomination a été faite par le conseil d’administration de la Caisse et a été approuvée par le gouvernement du Québec. « Au cours de son deuxième mandat, Michael Sabia a continué d’amener la Caisse plus loin, en lui donnant les moyens de saisir les meilleures occasions d’investissement. La mise en œuvre de plusieurs de ces stratégies importantes est toujours en cours. La mondialisation des activités de l’institution, l’évolution en continu des portefeuilles pour répondre aux défis de l’environnement de marché actuel et le projet de Réseau électrique métropolitain, pour ne citer que ceux-là, sont autant de projets porteurs pour la Caisse.
