In his presentation, the US investor painted a particularly dark picture of the situation in France. “The bond markets consider France like Germany, though it more closely resembles Greece,” he said. “Greece has taken the bitter medicine, it has restructured its bonds and its economy. It has ceased to live above its means. France, for its part, seems to be too proud to reform.” However, as the economic newspaper writes, 10-year debt is trading at 1.3% in France, and 9% in Greece. “If the markets were to revise French sovereign risk to its fair value, servicing French debt would become unaffordable,” Einhorn claims. “That is why we recommend (short) selling French debt.” On the contrary, he recommends buying bonds from Greek banks. “Investors are all worried about Greece, but they should be more worried about France. The returns on French bonds, as we see them today, should not exist”, he concluded.
