Actively-managed funds may create alpha, but this outperformance is not sustainable, concludes a study by iShares, a firm specialised in ETF funds (currently up for sale by its owner, Barclays). In 2000, nearly 39% of equities and fixed-income funds analysed by iShares (representing EUR750bn) outperformed their benchmark, while equities funds scored even better, with 42% doing so. Between 2000 and 2008, between 25% and 39% of the products under review outperformed their benchmarks. But this outperformance is not always lasting. iShares cites the example of the year 2005, when 24% of all funds performed better than their indexes. In 2002, 57% of all funds managed to outperform their benchmarks, and the following year, only 30% did so.In these turbulent times, the demonstration is even more striking. Taking equities funds in 2006, 38% did better than their index. But only 51% of these funds outperformed their benchmarks in 2007, and only 14% in 2008. iShares goes on to demonstrate that ETFs (in this case their own) have a tendency to outperform, and that this outperformance is sustained over time. This leads iShares naturally to recommend that ETFs be included in funds of funds, at least in the core portion of the portfolio, as some management actors are already beginning to do (see interview with Bernard Aybran of Invesco). Eric Wohleber, director of iShares France, says this is a means by which ETF funds will be able to reach ?passive? clients.
Eleanor Squillari, Bernard Madoff’s secretary for more than 20 years, thinks that he is protecting others, the Wall Street Journal reports. In an interview with NBC’s Today, she suggests that her former employer carefully orchestrated his arrest and that he is protecting other people implicated in the fraud by failing to cooperate with investigators.
In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Edouard Carmignac states that he is 62 years old, and that his work still gives him pleasure, and that he is planning to stay on board. But he is naturally thinking about the future. The important thing is for the management firm (EUR14bn in 16 funds), and with it, the team, should remain independent in their decisions. Next year, his daughter may return to the business. Carmignac says she is certainly a candidate to succeed him, but that others also stand a good chance.
Efforts by the European Union to regulate hedge funds will affect other alternative investments such as real estate funds and trusts, say lawyers interviewed by the Financial Times. The new regulations, which will increase compliance costs for managers who sell their products in Europe, may also lead a number of offshore hedge funds to move back onshore within the EU.
In an interview with Les Echos, Henri de Castries, chairman of the board at Axa, defends the solidity of his group. ?Axa has earned EUR8bn in cash flow in life insurance, signed up more than 1 million new individual damage insurance policies, and earned net results of nearly EUR1bn,? he says. He also offers explanations for motions on the agenda at the general shareholders’ meeting this Thursday which would authorise the firm to issue EUR2bn in preferential shares. Despite this resolution, De Castries says he has no plans to undertake a capital increase.
Daniel Bouton, chairman of the board of directors at Société Générale, has announced his resignation ?from 6 May,? in a statement issued by the bank this morning. The board of directors will elect a new chairman on this date, Bouton says. ?Repeated attacks against me personally, in France, in the past 15 months have affected me, and more importantly, they run the risk of damaging a bank with 163,000 employees,? says the director, who admits, ?like all directors, [of having] certainly made mistakes.? He argues that ?the strategy adopted has put Société Générale among the best-positioned banks in the Euro zone.? In an interview published this morning in Le Figaro, Bouton states that he will be leaving the bank with ?zero? severance indemnities.
In an interview with Le Figaro, Christine Lagarde explains why the European directive on hedge funds does not satisfy France. ?The point on which the bill is not acceptable is that the European Commission wants to set up a ‘mutual recognition’ system. This kind of system, which is based on a network of mutual agreements, would open the door to the arrival in Europe of funds from the Cayman Islands, which could never be controlled directly by the European Union. Then offshore funds could become a Trojan horse!? declares the economy and finance minister.
Arpad Busson, founder and chairman of EIM, is confident in the future of hedge funds. In an interview with Le Temps, he predicts that redemptions ?will stabilise by the end of the year.? He claims that hedge funds will need to earn 15% to 25% returns to make up for losses in 2008 and return to a point at which they can claim performance commissions. ?This will be possible in the next 18-36 months,? Busson says.
In an interview with the Börsen-Zeitung, the two co-CEOs of Allianz Global Investors Deutschland (AGI), Horst Eich and Thomas Wiesemann, say that, after the conclusion of the acquisition of cominvest, undertaken early in 2009, there will be more than 150 layoffs, out of a total personnel of 1,600. The objective will be to reduce costs to bring the operating coefficient down to 60%, from a level of 70% in 2008. Net subscriptions, largely from institutional investors, have already totalled over EUR2bn since the beginning of the year. Eich and Wiesemann also state that their firm’s joint venture with DekaBank, Dealis, may take on additional partners.

In an interview with Das Investment, Klaus Dahmann, head of distribution at Legg Mason for Germany and Austria, admits that the group is still understaffed in European equities management. He says the US fund management firm is hoping to strengthen its presence in Germany in funds of funds, family offices, IFAs, IFA networks, and institutionals, but that it is not currently planning to enter the retail client market. In Spring, the group is expected to release a new corporate bond fund in Germany, managed by Western Asset. The portfolio will include a maximum of 10% financial sector bonds, and will concentrate on paper with ratings, without any subordinate issues, and hedged for currency risks.

According to a study entitled ?UCITS as a Global Brand,? undertaken by Lipper Feri on behalf of Efama, which surveyed 22 asset management firms with cross-border activities, and assets totalling EUR472.23bn as of the end of 2008, 66% of heads interviewed are predicting net subscriptions to UCITS co-ordinated funds in Europe to increase from this year. 50% of heads believe that sales of these funds will increase in Japan. These positive expectations are confirmed by net subscriptions of EUR30bn in January-February, compared with outflows of EUR15bn in November and December, and EUR145bn in fourth quarter 2008 overall. Efama claims that one of the reasons for this optimism is that low interest rates may convince investors to reposition themselves in UCITS funds in order to take advantage of higher returns. In 2008, UCITS funds in Europe and Asia saw net redemptions of EUR20.8bn and EUR11.8bn, respectively. Net subscriptions were limited to EUR1.6bn in Latin America, and EUR2.36bn in the Middle East.
Stuart Schweitzer is a global strategist at JP Morgan (private banking and asset management). In an interview with Les Echos, he estimates that although the low point on the stock markets is behind us, ?more falls are to be expected, as the market will continue to yo-yo for a few months.? The financial markets may fall, he says, in the next few days or weeks, by 5% to 10%. In this environment, Schweitzer gives his preference to the United States and Asia ex Japan. ?In sectoral terms, cyclical sectors and financials will outperform in periods of rising markets,? he adds.
