In an interview with the Börsen-Zeitung, Gunter Dunkel, chairman of the board, says that the Norddeutsche Landesbank (NordLB), which barely pulled off a pass in recent stress tests, will be obliged to increase its capital by selling off some stakes in other companies, including DekaBank, the central management firm for the German savings banks. NordLB and its affiliate, Bremer Landesbank, control more than 10% of Deka.

In his first interview since being appointed chairman of the board at BHF-Bank, Björn Robens has told the Börsen-Zeitung that he would not like the firm to be bought up by a private equity actor, but that the situation could be placed in perspective if a bank wished to join forces with a private equity actor. Ideally, the buyer would need to be a bank strong enough to refinance BHF alone. Only a limited number of candidates will be allowed in the data room. LGT and Julius Bär are reported to be among them. The sale of the business by Deutsche Bank will be agreed in October or November, and closed by the end of the year. In first half, all divisions of the business showed a profit.

In an interview with Il Sole – 24 Ore, Domenico Siniscalco, vice president of Morgan Stanley International and country head for Italy at the firm, who has also recently become president of Assogestioni, the Italian association of management professionals, claims that the competitiveness of the Italian asset management sector needs to be promoted. The former Italian minister of the economy says that the UCITS IV legislation may cause large-scale movements in the industry, “with the paradox that Italian savings would be managed abroad, and would be taxed abroad.” Italy, which is a country of savers, “may become a net importer of financial products made elsewhere,” he adds. Siniscalco therefore calls for a reform of the tax structures applicable to Italian funds, which are currently at a disadvantage compared with those of other countries. He also calls for an initiative to support the repatriation of asset management firms based in other countries. “It would be desirable for management firms which decide to return to Italy to be able to continue to earn profits for a certain period of time on profits which they make in the countries to which they have moved.”

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Boris Collardi, CEO of Julius Baer, has referred by name to BHF-Bank as a potential target for the Swiss bank’s external growth policy. He said that he had studied the cases of Sal. Oppenheim (acquired by Deutsche Bank) and of Merck Finck (acquired by Hinduja with KBL European Partners), which was too expensive. The acquisition would be a part of Juluis Baer’s plans to become profitable in Germany, which along with Switzerland and Italy is one of the key markets for the bank in Europe.

Investor morale has turned around in July. According to the most recent survey by BofA Merrill Lynch, undertaken between 1 and 8 July, and interviewing 202 fund managers with total assets of USD530bn, investors are once again seeing dark clouds on the horizon. 12% predict that the economy will deteriorate in the next 12 months, while the previous month, 24% thought that growth was likely to increase. Appetite for risk has fallen steeply, as cash has gained weight in portfolios (up to 4.4% of the average portfolio, compared with 4.1% in May), and exposure to cyclical equities has been reduced. Michael Harnett, chief global equity strategist at BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research, says that “growth and profit outlooks are predicting a double dip. If the next statistics don’t confirm this double dip, assets may have a much better third quarter.” Despite the low valuation of equities and increasingly high bond prices, the percentage of managers who are overweight on equities has fallen to 11%, from 30% in May, while those who are underweight in bonds is down to 15%, from 29% in May.

Rothschild & Cie Gestion announced on Tuesday, 7 July that it has opened a Swiss branch, based in Zurich, which will aim to develop local institutional clients, and to accelerate the firm’s international development. In an interview with Newsmanagers, Jean-Louis Laurens, managing partner, chairman of the board, explains: “We are clearly betting on the German-speaking countries, and Switzerland has made itself an important element of that project. Since it is outside the European Community, we will have to create an entity there and license our funds.” In addition, the Swiss office will be led by Konstantin Nikiteas, who has recently been appointed director of Northern Europe, whom Laurens congratulates on his recent recruitment from his previous job as director of Axa IM. Nikiteas will take over commercial development strategy and fund sales, and will also liaise with Paris to coordinate commercial deployment in Germany and Austria. In terms of staff, 260 layoffs are expected, of which 185 will be in France, but 60 other positions will be created in sales and risk management activities. Overall, only 150 jobs will be lost. At a press conference in Berlin, George Soros has publicly expressed his opinion about the current Euro crisis. The European countries are doing precisely the opposite of what is needed to save the Euro: they are cutting spending, and that will plunge the continent into a deflationary spiral, led by Germany, he says in an interview in Die Welt am Sonntag. The monetary union is founded on German fears of inflation, but there is nothing to protect against the opposite problem, deflation, which is currently a danger. German paranoia about inflation is also paralysing the European Central Bank, which should be much more active in the current situation. Soros claims that the European project can only now be saved if Germany accepts its leading role, which means, in concrete terms, that it agrees to pay up. Financial support for Greece and other Mediterranean countries is in Germany’s best interests. If Spain or another large country goes down, German banks are in danger of going down with them: helping Euro partners is much less expensive than putting the pieces of its own ruined banking system back together later on.
Since October 2009, James Dilworth (ex Goldman Sachs and ex Morgan Stanley) joined Allianz Global Investors (AGI) as head of German operations. In an interview with Das Investment, he says, not unprovocatively, that the German market should ideally have no more than about 500 funds. This means that in the future, AGI will need to close more funds than it launches in this area. Dilworth says that AGI is currently in the process of identifying funds which have flagship potential, and does not want to prejudice the results of these efforts. He agrees, however, when interviewers suggest the names of Concentra and Fondak (both former ADIG funds), “which have been around for ages, and which are heading for strong performance.” He says that AGI is also very strong in European, Asian and US equities. At Pimco, some funds have what it takes to become flagship products on the German market, he says.
