Assets under management by the 500 largest asset management firms worldwide rose by nearly 12% to a record total of USD76.000trn in 2013, topping the previous record of over USD69trn in 2007. The global study P&I / Towers Watson global 500 reveals that, due to constant growth in assets over the past six years, their total has nearly doubled since 2002.“The year 2013 was clearly, once again, a good year for most asset management firms, independently of the type of asset under management, which resulted in new records in all sectors. Although the industry appears to be in good health, there are reasons it would be premature to rejoice, in light of the numerous challenges and mid-term objetives the global economy faces, and taking into account the risks of a decline in global growth. Meanwhile, asset management companies, especially the largest ones, are at risk of being subjected to a detailed examination of their role at the company and the value they bring to investors,” says Thierry de la Noue, director of the investment department at Towers Watson France. The United States dominate the rankings, with 12 asset management firms in the top 20, representing two thirds of all assets under management. BlackRock remains the top player, with EUR4.324trn in assets under management in 2013, followed by Vanguard Group (USD2.7529trn) and Allianz (USD2.3925trn). The proportion of assets from US asset management firms over the past 10 years has risen from 41% to more than 50%, largely to the detriment of Swiss, Japanese and British asset management firms, which have lost 5%, 4%, and 2%, in order, for market share of 4%, 6% and 8%, respectively.
