Affluent investors throughout Europe are confident in their ability to construct their own portfolios, according to a survey performed by Cerulli Associates of individuals with at least EUR200,000 in investable assets. In Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, at least 60% of respondents say they are either «fairly» or «very» confident in their ability to adopt a «do-it-yourself» (DIY) approach to investing. The one holdout is Spain, where only 26% of respondents have faith in their ability to use the DIY method.“The high confidence among investors in sophisticated markets reflects the level of financial education in Europe; it also suggests that investors in these countries might have a limited regard for professional advice,” says Barbara Wall, managing director at Cerulli.Cerulli estimates that this survey is good news for robo-advisors. 42% of respondents in the United Kingdom say they are planning to invest via an automated online investment tool.

Dividends are slowing up worldwide. According to a report undertaken by the asset management firm Henderson Global Investors (Henderson GI), dividends fell by 4% internationally in third quarter 2016, “which represents the lowest returns since second quarter 2015.” According to the Henderson global dividend index (HGDI), they totalled USD281.7bn in third quarter 2016, a decline of USD11.9bn compared with third quarter 2015. Underlying dividends (after adjustments for one-time dividends and currency effects), for their part, fell by 0.3% in the same period. In its report, Henderson GI attributes this decline in dividends to three main factors. Firstly, the asset management firm notes that one-time dividends have declined, particularly in the United States, which has affected the growth rate for total dividends. Also, third quarter is traditionally marked by a seasonal peak in some regions where dividends are rising more weakly at present, such as emerging markets, Australia and the United Kingdom. Lastly, regular growth in dividends has slowed considerably in the United States, which is a large contributor to dividends worldwide. “The United States pay out two fifths of dividends worldwide and as a result their evolution has a significant impact on the total,” says Henderson GI. In the United States, dividends have fallen 7% in third quarter, to a total of USD100.4bn. This steep decline is primarily related to non-repitition of large one-time dividends paid in third quarter 2015, the asset management firm says. But there have also been moderate increases in profits in the United States, largely due to the solidity of the US dollar. The study also highlights the fact that the debt level for US companies has risen, “which has led them to try to preserve cash flows.”In this general environment, Henderson has lowered its growth outlooks for dividends in 2016. According to the asset management firm, total dividends can now be expected to increase by 0.9% compared with 2015, which corresponds to an increase of 1% in underlying dividends. Internationally, dividends are expected to total USD1.16otrn at the conclusion of the 2016 fiscal year.
