The financial ratings agency Moody’s on 16 May announced that it has scaled up its team specialised in the analysis of African sovereign issuers, responding to strong growth in the economies of the region, and to demand from investors for research into sovereign debt from the continent. The team will be led by Matt Robinson, who recently led research into government debt worldwide. The agency already rates 18 government issuers and 8 multilateral development banks on the African continent. International issues by African governments, financial institutions and businesses have risen by about 300% in the past ten years, Moody’s points out, adding that activity in the region is supported by growth in foreign direct investment, large-scale investment in infrastructure, the emergence of a middle class, and an abundance of natural resources.
The Belgian asset management firm Petercam estimates that it is a particularly favourable period to return to emerging markets, but preferably with a sustainable strategy. The Petercam L Bonds Emerging Markets Sustianable fund, launched slightly over one year ago, has held out well through the turbulence on emerging markets in 2013, at any rate. The strategy lost only 3.82% from its launch until the end of April 2014, compared with a decline of slightly over 6% fo thte SRI Emerging Inde, and a maximum drawdown of 11.11%, compared with 12.10% for the index – all with volatility under 6%. The source of this resistance is the establishment of a rigorous SRI approach with numerous filters. Firstly, a proprietary filter puts the emphasis on democracy and respect for human rights, allowing the selection of slightly over 80 countries. Then, an exclusionary filter put in place with Freedom House categorizes countries into three groups: free, partially free, and not free. If countries classed as unfree with Freedom House are confirmed as authoritarian in the Democracy Index calculated by the Economist, they are excluded from the investable universe. Hence, the portfolio is exposed neiher to Ukraine nor to Russia. 16 other countries were excluded, including Algeria, Vietnam, China and Angola. The portfolio also is required to contain at least 40% top quartile, and 50% in the second and third quariles, and a maximum of 10% in the bottom quartile of the rankings. As a result, compared with a reference index including 75% debt denominated in local currencies and 25% in hard currencies (Barclays indices), the sustianable filter of the fund has allowed for positive alpha of 1.90% to have ben earned since launch comapred with the index, whle the active management style adds 1.36% in outperformance, which gives total alpha of 3.26%.
It has been a good start to the year for dividends, with some regional disparities, however. Dividends worldwide rose by 31.4% in first quarter, to a total of USD228.4bn, according to the quarterly index published by Henderson Global Investors. The Henderson Global Dividend Index reached a record 151.3. However, a special dividend of USD26bn distributed by Vodafone represented nearly half of the inrease observed in first quarter. Not counting special dividends, dividends are up by 12.1%, a pace not seen since fourth quarter 2012. The United States show the strongest growth, with a rise of 30.2% in total, and 16% in data corrected for special dividends and changes to indices. These increases are very widely distributed over virtually all sectors, with the exception of telecommunications and utilities, which have relatively low increases. Dividends are up 14.8% in the United Kingdom and 8.9% in Europe, driven by a strong pound Sterling and euro. However, second quarter is the biggest for Europe, with the short-term currency factor. In Japan, however, diidends were down 20.6% in first quarter, or 16% not counting special dividends, with the weak yen responsible for most of the decline. But Japanese corproate profits are oriented upward, which leaves potential for growth in dividends. Dividends in emerging markets are up 7% worldwide and in data corrected for special dividends.
