p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; } Pay scales for asset management in 2016 can be expected to fall by about 10% compared with 2015 levels, a study by Greenwich Associates finds. The drop will be steepest for hedge fund managers, who can expect their income to fall by 10-15%, compared with a decline of 5-10% for traditional asset managers. “Remuneration for hedge funds has still not recovered from its steep decline compared with 2013 levels, and we do not anticipate a return to these levels in the near future,” says Kevin Kozlowski, partner analyst at Greenwich. The study also finds that the attractiveness of hedge fund salaries compared with traditional management is decreasing. Bond professionals working at hedge funds made only 1.3 times the levels observed at traditionnal companies. The average remuneration in bonds in 2015 was USD610,000 for hedge fund professionals, compared with USD470,000 for traditional companies. For equities, it is no longer attractive at all to work for a hedge fund. Traditional management professionals beat their hedge fund counterparts in 2015. Traditional management professionals made USD800,000, compared with USD560,000 for hedge funds.
p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; } Fund selection and due diligence are entering the digital age. Investors in funds are facing difficulties in collecting information from asset management firms at a time when they have never had a greater need for transparency, speed of analysis and comparison of qualitative information. Against this background, a new solution is emerging. Supported by the French investment fund professional association APFI, 10 investors representing major distributors, Mediolanum, Santander, EFG and Pictet Bank, have decided to work in close collaboration with 12 large asset management firms, including Aberdeen, Columbia Threadneedle, Franklin Templeton, M&G, Nordea Asset Management, Pictet Asset Management, and Schroders. The objective is to bring new technologies to the process of fund analysis. Teams of investors now spend a lot of time collecting and organizing information about funds, while at the same time, managers have set up large teams to respond to their information requests in a variety of formats. By studying investor due diligence questionnaires, the association was able to establish that about 90% of questions are shared by all actors. Practical track records and increasing regulatory requirements cost further work, both for investors and managers, while communication of information to investors could be “significantly improved,” the association finds. It is also true that a lack of standardization of best practices in due diligence questionnaires results in added work for managers, sometimes doubling the documentation workload over a 12-month period. All of these problems will be solved by a digital platform known as DOOR, which will offer updated responses to a “Standard Questionnaire,” which will allow investors a solid source of shared information at any time, and thus to concentrate on further questions specific to their needs. Access to the platform will be free for investors. The other positive points related to the initiative include improvement in best practices, overseen by the APFI, quick exchange of information, which will allow asset management firms to redeploy their resources, more information provided about the full ranges of funds available, and acceleration and democratisation of communications about funds and their performance. “In the world we live in today as we face a glut of information, this initiative, unique in its field, can add a lot of value to the manager selection process. The DOOR platform and its technology can make the difference by freeing up time for analysis of the data and critical reflection, and by gaining time in the collection of this data. A more productive collaboration between investors and managers will be welcome from our point of view,” says Brian O’Rourke, head of the multi-manager division at Mediolanum.
Tell me what kind of car your hedge fund manager drives, and I will tell you what propensity they have to take risks and beat the market.Hedge fund managers who own fast sports cars take more risks in their investments than those who don’t have such cars, a new university study by Yan Lu, Sugata Ray and Melvyn Teo finds. However, this higher level of risk does not result in higher returns. As a result, they have weaker Sharpe ratios than managers who do not own sports cars.Sports car drivers earn returns which are 1.8 percentage points more volatile on an annual basis than those who do not drive sports cars. This is a 61.16% increase in volatility compared with those who do not drive sports cars. The opposite is also true. Managers who have “practical but less exciting” cars take fewer risks than those who do not have such cars. Specifically, minivan owners earn returns which are less volatile by 1.28 percentage points compared with other car owners. The study also finds that owners of sports cars are more likely to close their funds, behave in fraudulent ways, accumulate shares from outside indices, and to show excessive confidence. After considering several possible explanations for this finding, the authors of the study conclude that the preference of managers for a particular vehicle is an indicator of a personality trait representing a desire for a sensation, which is also a contributing factor to the behaviour of the manager in the investment field.Lu, Ray and Teo had already become known for a study two years ago of the impact of divorces and marriages on the performance of hedge fund managers.
