The US states of New York and Connecticut have subpoenaed seven banks as part of their investigations into manipulation of interest rated used to compose Libor, according to reports published concurrently by several news agencies. Among the banks are UBS, JPMorgan Chase and Barclays. Citigroup, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank are among the banks which prosecutors from the two states have asked to provide documents under the investigation, a source claims. At this time, the authorities have demanded documents, but have not sought hearings with the directors of the banks concerned. The two US states are seeking in part to uncover any communications between the management of the banks which may suggest that there was an illicit pact, or any other behaviour which may have been tied to this suspected manipulation of Libor.
More than 120 asset managers, investment banks and trading firms have signed a guide issued by the Association of Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) to taxation of financial markets introduced in France on 1 August this year. The 18-page document specifies the range of companies concerned, and proposes a standardised approach to the new tax.

The German wealth management firm Frankfurt Trust has decided to release the Luxembourg-registered fund BHF Flexible Allocation FT, launched on 10 October 2007, and which had previously been available only to clients of BHF-Bank, the parent company of Frankfurt Trust, with assets of EUR92m, in Germany.The product, which has a five-star rating from Morningstar, is managed by BHF Trust, an asset allocation specialist. Brummer & Partners has hired Michael Falken as manager for its new hedge fund Carve Capital, according to the Swedish website Realtid.se. He had previously worked at Öhman, as a fixed income specialist manager.
Assets under management at the wealth management firm VZ Holding as of 30 June this year totalled CHF9.15bn, compared wih CHF8.43bn as of the end of December 2011, according to a statement released on 16 August. Net inflows in first half totalled CHF0.6bn, compared with CHF528m in first half 2011. VZ Holding has earned a net profit for first half down 5.1%, to CHF23.8m, while operating costs increased by 5.5% to CHF40.9m.
The Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV) on 17 August announced that its assets under management had increased 4%, or CHF2.9bn, in first half, to a total of CHF80bn. Net inflows totalled CHF372m. The bank explains that funds from private clients, SMEs and pension funds contributed to inflows (totalling a net CHF1bn), while short-term funds from large businesses brought in slightly over CHF600m, due to “deliberately low” remuneration on these deposits. Earnings at the bank increased 1%, to CHF508m, while gross profits improved by 4%, to CHF242m, and net profits rose 2%, to CHF157m.
The assets under management (AUM) of the Investment Management division of Swiss Life increased 5% in the first half of 2012 at CHF141.07bn. Third party AUM were up CHF2bn at CHF18.5bn, with CHF1.6bn net new money and CHF0.5bn market movements, the company said on Friday.Investment Management also made a larger contribution to profits: thanks to increases in assets under management and corresponding growth in asset management fee revenues, profits rose by 7% to CHF61m.Results were down at Swiss Life International and AWD. Swiss Life International incurred a loss of CHF3mi due to negative currency effects and higher costs. AWD, on the other hand, posted a slightly higher operating result than in the first half of 2011 (EUR22.4m / +3%). However, due to EUR 9.3m in provisions for litigation, AWD’s contribution to Group earnings declined to EUR 13.1m (HY 2011: EUR21.8m).
Bernhard Utiger, head of CRM for independent wealth management clients, banks and insurers in Zurich for JPMorgan Asset Management, has been recruited by the Swiss affiliate of the German firm Flossbach von Storch as director of relations with Swiss distribution partners and institutional clients.Kurt von Storch, chairman of the board of directors at Flossbach von Storch Switzerland, states that the firm is now planning to develop outside the area of private clients, and to enter the open-ended fund segment, releasing products to independent wealth management firms, family offices, banks and insurers.For five years, Flossbach von Storch had specialised in wealth management in Switzerland, with eight staff for that activity in Zurich.

BlackRock vient de recruter Bartlett R. Geer de Putnam Investments en vue de renforcer son équipe de gestion active sur les actions, rapporte Reuters. L’intéressé, qui pilotait le fonds Equity Income Fund de 3,5 milliards de dollars chez Putnam, rejoindra le géant de la gestion d’actifs en septembre, selon une porte-parole citée par l’agence de presse.

La société de gestion alternative Bridgewater Associates envisage de quitter Westport dans le Connecticut, pour s’installer à Stamford, toujours dans le Connecticut, qui pourrait lui accorder une subvention de 115 millions de dollars pour l’accompagner dans son projet, selon le site boston.com.Bridgewater entend mener à bien son projet, qui représente un investissement de 750 millions dollars, d’ici à 2017. La société prévoit d’installer l’ensemble de ses effectifs de 1.225 personnes, dispersés actuellement dans plusieurs bâtiments à Westport, dans sa nouvelle implantation. Bridgewater prévoit également d’embaucher 1.000 personnes dans les dix prochaines années. Les actifs sous gestion de Bridgewater s'élèvent à environ 130 milliards de dollars.
Le département du Trésor américain a annoncé hier qu’il comptait prolonger une ligne d’obligations indexées sur l’inflation avec une adjudication prévue aujourd’hui de 14 milliards de dollars à 4 ans et 8 mois. Le coupon est fixé à 0,125%. La Réserve fédérale américaine (Fed) détient actuellement 3.556 milliards de dollars de TIPS dans son portefeuille.
Barrick Gold, le plus important producteur canadien de métaux précieux, a annoncé qu’il envisageait de céder sa participation de 74% dans la société tanzanienne cotée à Londres African Barrick au groupe chinois China National Gold. De quoi faire bondir les actions d’African Barrick de 10% hier à 432,1 pence. La part détenue par Barrick Gold, conseillé par UBS dans cette opération, est estimée à environ 1,3 milliard de livres (1,66 milliard d’euros).
Le nombre des inscriptions hebdomadaires au chômage a augmenté aux Etats-Unis de 2.000 à 366.000 CVS sur la semaine au 11 août, a fait savoir le département du Travail. Le consensus donnait 365.000. La moyenne mobile sur quatre semaines a diminué de 5.000 à 363.750 inscriptions, au plus bas depuis mars et la deuxième plus basse depuis avril 2008.
L’activité industrielle de la région de Philadelphie s’est contractée en août pour le quatrième mois d’affilée, mais à un rythme moins soutenu. La Réserve fédérale de Philadelphie a publié hier son indice d’activité ressortant à -7,1 contre -12,9 en juillet, alors que les économistes attendaient -5. La composante des commandes nouvelles a elle progressé à -5,5 contre -6,9. La composante emploi, à -8,6 contre -8,4 en juillet, au plus bas depuis septembre 2009.
Le régulateur a ouvert en juillet une enquête sur un soupçon de délit d’initié concernant des opérations sur des actions Wendel, écrivait hier Le Point sur son site internet. Selon l’hebdomadaire, ces mouvements remontent à novembre 2011, au moment où le groupe annonçait être en négociations exclusives avec TE Connectivity pour céder sa filiale Deutsch. L’annonce de l’opération avait entraîné un bond de 16% du titre Wendel le 30 novembre.
Le groupe indien aurait l’intention de racheter quelque 12 millions de barils de pétrole brut au groupe colombien Ecopetrol sur une période d’une année pour un montant total de 1,2 milliard de dollars, selon le Financial Times qui cite des sources proches. Après l’annonce d’une perte de 250,2 millions au deuxième trimestre, Essar Oil a indiqué mercredi qu’il comptait augmenter sa marge brute de raffinage de 5,12 dollars actuellement à 7-8 dollars au prochain trimestre.

Les investisseurs ont également voulu saluer les annonces de Cisco Systems. L’action a bondi de 9,62% à 19,02 dollars après l’annonce d’un relèvement du dividende de 75% et la publication de résultats étonnamment bons. Le Dow Jones des 30 valeurs industrielles américaines a pris 0,65%, à 13.250,11 points, tandis que le Nasdaq a gagné 1,04%, à 3.062,39 points.
Selon la fédération des Chambres de Commerce et d’Industrie allemandes (DIHK), la croissance des exportations allemandes ne va être que de 4% cette année, soit moitié moins qu’en 2011, en raison de la récession en zone euro. Les exportations allemandes ont progressé de 8,2% en 2011 et de 13,7% en 2010 après une chute de 13,6% en 2009. La zone euro est le premier marché à l’export de l’Allemagne.
Les ventes au détail ont crû de 0,3% sur un mois en juillet, pour afficher une progression annuelle de 2,8%, a annoncé hier l’Office national de la statistique. Les économistes interrogés par Reuters les attendaient en repli de 0,1% sur un mois et en croissance de 2,4% sur un an. Les chiffres des ventes du mois de juin ont en outre été révisés pour ressortir en hausse de 0,8% sur un mois contre une première estimation de +0,1%.
Les flux d’investissements étrangers directs arrivant en Chine ont reculé de 3,6% à 66,7 milliards de dollars sur les sept premiers mois de l’année, selon des données publiées par le ministère du Commerce. Sur le seul mois de juillet, ces investissements ont reculé de 8,7% sur un an, à 7,6 milliards.
Après avoir lancé plusieurs enquêtes sur les manipulations du Libor, la justice américaine vient de franchir une nouvelle étape en citant à comparaître sept banques devant les tribunaux dont Deutsche Bank et JPMorgan Chase. Des investigations étendues se poursuivent. La voie du compromis transactionnel pourrait être privilégiée comme pour Barclays.
