Il s’agirait de la seconde année consécutive au-delà de 20% pour les principaux fonds du hedge fund de Chicago.
Le distributeur américain va céder cinq de ses chaînes de supermarchés (Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s et Star Market) à un groupe d’investisseurs mené par Cerberus Capital Management pour un total de 3,3 milliards de dollars. Supervalu a également fait état d’un bénéfice de 16 millions de dollars au cours du troisième trimestre clos le 1er décembre, contre une perte de 750 millions un an auparavant.
L’autorité allemande de régulation financière, la BaFin, achèvera d’ici à fin mars son enquête sur le rôle éventuel de Deutsche Bank dans le scandale de manipulation du Libor, rapporte Reuters. La société de gestion de deux fonds communs de placements à risques a pris fin 2012 une participation dans la holding patrimoniale de Jacques de Chateauvieux, fondateur du groupe Bourbon. Depuis fin 2011, nous avons significativement revu à la hausse le poids des obligations convertibles, d'1,7 % à 2,8 % de notre encours total. En complément des investissements en OPCVM, nous nous sommes notamment renforcés au mois de septembre lors de la reprise du marché primaire en souscrivant en direct aux «émissions de plusieurs entreprises françaises » Le renforcement des obligations convertibles dans les portefeuilles de la MAIF étant déjà significatif depuis 2010, la part de la classe d’actif devrait être relativement stable au cours des prochains mois. Nous sommes positionnés sur l’Asie via nos fonds de convertibles internationales, mais nous ne souhaitons pas investir pour le moment sur des fonds purs Asie. Nous avons aujourd’hui douze gérants en portefeuille, cinq français et sept étrangers. Cette liste n’est pas restrictive, le nombre de gérant pouvant évoluer notamment en fonction de nos encours.

Qui dit monétaire ne dit pas forcément Eonia. Il va falloir se repositionner en partie. Pour la première moitié de 2013, je vais continuer à renforcer la poche corporate dans un premier temps, avec un espoir au deuxième semestre, voire au quatrième trimestre d’y voir un peu plus clair et d’aller plus franchement sur les marchés actions. L’embellie que l’on connaît actuellement sur ces marchés me sert dans mon allocation et dans mon résultat de fin d’année. De là à y aller beaucoup plus franchement dès le début 2013, je ne suis pas prêt. Pour terminer sur ces marchés en se rapportant au processus qui est le nôtre aujourd’hui, nous n’avons pas décidé de modifier celui-ci en cette fin d’année. Ce dernier est très quantitatif puisque nous avons une prudence peut être excessive sur une grande partie de notre portefeuille. Nous verrons ce qu’il en est. Mais le temps d’investir sur les marchés de grande capitalisation n’est pas revenu selon nous. On n’y est pas encore. Nous allons y aller un peu, car il le faut du fait de certains marchés très peu méritoires. Cela se comprend. Mais la BCE peut baisser son taux de refinancement au moins de 25 centimes, ce qui serait un dernier pas. En revanche, nous ne sommes pas présent dans le high yield. Sur les marchés actions, nous investirons donc courant deuxième semestre 2013. Nous reviendrons sur les grandes capitalisations européennes. Éventuellement, nous avons un point d’interrogation sur les États- Unis. Nous avons géré la volatilité de notre portefeuille sur un plan global. Le poids des monétaires est très important, mais à côté, nous avons opté pour de la performance. Cette position d’aujourd’hui sera peut-être tout à fait différente dans le mois qui vient. Il faut surtout être très réactif avec une vision. La vision que nous n’avons pas eue ces derniers temps nous a entraînés à investir dans des actifs de long terme. Les gérants actions aimeraient bien qu’on ne soit plus dans cette réaction où l’on parle de long terme avec des produits dans lesquels on peut sortir en deux ou trois jours. A ce titre, en matière d’investissement de long terme, nous avons renforcé ces derniers temps notre poche de private equity. Nous faisons ainsi depuis deux ans. Nous consacrons 2,5 % au private equity, ce qui n’est peut-être pas négligeable. Et l’on est vraiment engagé dans le long terme. De l’ordre de 8-10 ans.
«La faiblesse économique dans la zone euro devrait se prolonger en 2013», a déclaré Mario Draghi lors de la conférence de presse qui traditionnellement suit l’annonce de la décision sur les taux directeurs. «Plus tard en 2013, l’activité économique devrait graduellement se reprendre», a ajouté le président de la BCE. Mario Draghi a expliqué que la décision de maintenir les taux inchangés a été prise à l’unanimité en raison d’un début de stabilisation de certains indicateurs, «bien qu'à de faibles niveaux», et d’un redressement significatif de la confiance sur les marchés financiers. «Il y a aujourd’hui une contagion positive à l’oeuvre», a estimé le banquier central.
Il est peu probable qu’un accord concernant le plan de sauvetage de Chypre soit conclu avant la fin janvier, a déclaré Jean-Claude Juncker, président de l’Eurogroupe. Les discussions concernant cette aide ont été compliquées par des inquiétudes relatives à la soutenabilité de la dette au vu du montant potentiel du plan de sauvetage. Ce montant pourrait aller jusqu'à 17 milliards d’euros, soit peu ou prou l'équivalent du PIB de Chypre.
Les stocks des grossistes américains ont enregistré en novembre une hausse plus forte que prévu, selon les chiffres publiés par le département du Commerce, qui a également fait état de la plus forte hausse des ventes des grossistes en plus de 18 mois. Les stocks des grossistes ont augmenté de 0,6% pour atteindre le niveau record de 498,95 milliards de dollars. Les stocks sont un élément clé du calcul du PIB. At a time which has seen the worst returns ever for flagship funds from Paulson Partners, and the “Advantages” which have been noted, hedge fund managers are setting up to make up for lost time in 2012. Several other Paulson funds have turned in satisfactory performances. Credit Opportunity, currently the largest fund at the firm, made 9.1% in 2012, Gold share gained 10.8%. The Recovery Fund in 2012 made 4.1% (+7.5% for the gold share). The best performance of last year was for the Merger Arbitrage fund, which gained 9.9%.
Monte Paschi Banque has sold its asset management activity Monte Paschi Invest (MPI) to Trusteam Finance. The French firm, whose assets under management totalled EUR300m before the operation, will have assets of EUR500m afterwards. In practice, the OPCVM fund management activity provided by Monte Paschi Invest until 31 December 2012 ill be transferred to Trusteam Finance from 2 January 2013. Three people from the staff of 12 people at MPI have also been recruited by Trusteam Finance. “Their product range is primarily invested in fixed income produts, and is thus perfectly complementary with our product range, which is largely invested in traditional equities,” says Jean-Sebastien Beslay, founding partner of Trusteam.A partnership between the two firms has concomitantly been signed, which will allow the firm to meet the needs of clients for wealth management, institutional management or enterprise cash management. The Italian bank, which has 15 branches in France, also intends to offer a range of financial products and services as complements to the equity and diversified funds from Trusteam Finance.In the short term, MPI funds will retain their names as Meyerbeer - Meyerbeer Trésorerie and Meyerbeer Valoblig, Beslay says. After first half, however, the full range will be made uniform, the director says, and “small” equity funds from Monte Paschi Invest will be merged with Trusteam funds.
The French valuation specialist DerivExperts on 9 January announced the opening of an office in London. The London branch represents a new step in the development of DerivExperts, and accompanies the deployment of its valuation platform for OTC products, the firm says in a statement.It will be active once European Market Infrastructure (EMIR) regulations come into force in 2013, to improve the transparency of risks on over-the-counter derivative markets, and from 22 July 2013, when the law will have been fully transposed in all countries concerned by the Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFM) directive, which regulates managers of non-UCITS funds.As Francis Cornut, chairman of DeriveExperts, explains: “as part of the development of our valuation platform for OTC products, London, the European centre of alternative management, is a natural place for a location necessarily to be, and this is all the more apparent as soon as EMIR and AIFM regulations come into effect. Lazard Frères Gestion finished the year 2012 on a very positive note. At the end of November, following a very difficult year, inflows nonetheless totalled EUR300m, the chairman of the firm, François-Marc Durand, announced on 9 January at a press conference. Durand emphasizes that equity inflows were positive for the fifth consecutive year. As of the end of November, they totalled EUR300m. The chairman of Lazard Frères Gestion also pointed to the good performance of all strategies from the firm, and particularly to gains of 30% for Objectif Alpha Euro, and 32% for Objectif Crédit FI. Laslty, the target-date fund dedicated to emerging market corporate bonds, launched in late 2012, has posted inflows of EUR100m.
The German open-ended real estate fund UniImmo: Global has sold the office and retail property at Fifth & Pine in Seattle (14,671 square metres) to Invesco Advisors for USD70.6m. The property was purchased for USD55m in 2005.Volker Noack, MD of Union Investment Real Estate (UIRE), states that the UniImmo: Global fund retains seven office and logistical properties in the US after this sale with a total value of about EUR335m.
Wesley Wang, a former analyst at the hedge fund firm SAC Capital (USD14bn), who co-operated with a US government investigation into insider trading, was sentenced to two years on parole on Wednesday. Prosecutors stated that the suspect named 20 people who made trades on the basis of insider information.
Oddo Asset Management has registered four new sub-funds in Italy, bringing the number of funds available in the country to 14, Bluerating reports. They are Avenir (French midcaps), European Banks (European banking equities), Valeurs Rendement (European high dividend equities) and Obligations Optimum (short-term bonds).

At the moment, Tomas Hedberg is head of interest rate and currency trading at Large Corporates & Institutions, Swedbank. He has held leading positions in the financial sector for many years. He will take up his new position on 28 January 2013. Marianne Nilsson, acting CEO since May 2012, will continue as deputy CEO and responsible for ownership issues at Swedbank Robur.
The hedge fund by Daniel Loeb on Wednesday announced that it holds an 8.2% stake in the food supplement firm Herbalife, valued at USD350m, the Wall Street Journal reports. At the same time, the fund from William Ackman, Pershing Square Capital Management, has bet more than USD1bn against the firm, short selling its shares. For observers, this could be shaping up to be one of the bloodiest hedge fund battles of all time.
James Tanner has been appointed as global head of business development & sales at Morningstar Inc., the firm has announced, stating that Tanner is the founder of Wall Street on Demand, a financial website development firm which was acquired by UK-based Markit two years ago. Tanner was most recently vice-chairman of business development at Markit, after serving as head of global distribution.Morningstar also states that its CFO, Scott Cooley, who joined the firm 17 years ago as an equity analyst, is planning to leave the group this year, once a successor has been found.
BlackRock and JPMorgan will publish daily asset values for their money-market funds, joining Goldman Sachs Asset Management, which was the first firm to announce such an initiative for its funds of US papers, the Financial Times reports. Others do not plan to provide a daily net asset value, such as Vanguard, the FT reports.
On 9 January, Lyxor Asset Management announced the launch of an ETF which replicates te MSCI ACWI Gold with EM DR 18% Group Entity Capped index on NYSE Euronext Paris. The product provides investors with exposure to gold, through investment in equities whose performance is strongly tied to that of the physical gold market. Gross inflows to bond funds totalled 67.7% of total inflows to retail clients in the first eleven months of the year, compared with only 18.6% inflows to equity funds, according to figures from the Hong Kong professional management association (HKIFA), cited by Asian Investor. In 2007, inflows to equity funds represented over 84% of the total, while bond funds accounted for only 6.3%. As of 30 November, gross and net inflows totalled USD51.4bn and USD13.6bn, respectively. Gross inflows are expected to total over USD55bn for the year as a whole. The association predicts a slight slowdown in inflows in 2013.
