Il est éligible comme tout OPCVM. Il peut être divisé. Cela dit, on n’a pas énormément d’ETF. C’est vrai qu’il y a aujourd’hui une offre qui est relativement importante. Dans les gestions quantitatives, même si les concepts sont parfois un peu anciens, les offres sont quand même assez récentes. On s’y est intéressé, car tout le monde s’est interrogé sur la construction des indices. On a un peu réfléchi à la question. Il est vrai que dans nos portefeuilles encore aujourd’hui, nous n’en avons pas beaucoup. D’ailleurs nous nous y sommes intéressés pour cette raison-là, pour les indices et pour les gestions flexibles où une offre importante s’est développée. Dans cette gestion flexible, on range les fonds tactiques, des gestions un peu fondamentales. On a un groupe de personnes qui se réunit assez régulièrement et qui détermine s’il faut surpondérer ou non. Nous nous apercevons que dans le temps cela ne donne pas toujours les résultats attendus. La question du facteur humain est importante parce qu’on s’est dit que dans la gestion flexible ou quantitative il fallait peut-être mettre un peu de côté le facteur humain. En effet, il est difficile de trouver le gérant qui va être capable de prendre des positions très nettes et qui va, dans ces fonds, varier de 0 à 100 son exposition actions. C’est difficile pour la bonne raison que s’il se trompe, cela sera préjudiciable. Ensuite ce n’est pas évident de s’y retrouver. Une machine finalement peut éventuellement permettre des prises de position assez nettes et il n’y a pas ce facteur humain difficile à mettre en oeuvre. Il est compliqué de trouver des bons gérants tactiques. Nous avons des réflexions sur ces nouvelles stratégies. Les stratégies sont nouvelles même si les concepts sont éventuellement anciens. On n’a aujourd’hui pas beaucoup de fonds dans nos portefeuilles qui peuvent répondre à ces critères. Ce n’est pas pour autant qu’on ne connaît pas la gestion quantitative. Mais on la connaît plutôt pour des gestions que vous avez mises dans la catégorie des gestions quantitatives s’appuyant sur des données fondamentales et non pas des données de marchés. Nous avons des fonds comme cela, d’assez longue date. Cela fait très longtemps que dans des poches actions nous avons une diversification associant des fonds en gestion qualitative de ce type et des gestions fondamentales. La part de la gestion quantitative dans notre portefeuille n’est pas si importante que cela parce qu’aujourd’hui nous avons des fonds diversifiés. Dans ces OPCVM, il y a peu de gestion quantitative malgré tout, même si à l’intérieur on peut y avoir recours. Après nous avons des portefeuilles ou des compartiments qui sont constitués de fonds spécialisés. C’est ici que nous allons trouver des fonds en gestion quantitative. Nous avons plutôt des grands gérants qui ne sont pas forcément dans la liste amLeague. D’abord parce que ce sont des fonds qui sont créés d’assez longue date. Quand on se tournait vers des gestions quantitatives il y a quelque temps, forcément nous allions plutôt vers des grosses machines. Cela m’est difficile de vous donner un pourcentage parce que nous avons aussi des gestions quantitatives qui sont sous contrainte de tracking error et qu’on classe dans les gestions indicielles. C’est aussi de la gestion quantitative. C’est donc compliqué de voir où cela commence et où cela s’arrête. Le constat que nous faisons sur les gestions quantitatives, surtout dans ces compartiments où on a associé des gestions quantitatives et des gestions fondamentales, c’est que les gestions quantitatives, qui sont des gestions qui modélisent ou qui répliquent le travail d’un gérant, marchent bien quand les configurations de marché sont assez régulières. Dès qu’on est dans des périodes avec des inversions, des rotations, les modèles peinent un peu. Ils ont souvent du mal à se remettre sur les rails. Cependant, il faut prendre tout cela dans le temps. Il y a des périodes favorables aux gestions quantitatives et des périodes qui le sont moins et qui sont donc plus favorables à des gestions fondamentales. Il faut regarder tout cela dans le temps et pondérer les deux. Le facteur humain existe toujours. Dans les maisons qu’on a pu suivre, c’est vrai qu’ils ne changent pas leur modèle fréquemment. Mais quand leur modèle sort un peu du bon chemin, ils s’interrogent et se posent des questions. J’ai été surpris en regardant les performances, car cela va de + 10 à -10. C’est une dispersion énorme. Qu’est-ce qui fait qu’on ait des écarts aussi importants pour des fonds qu’on met dans une catégorie ? Soit ce n’est pas comparable, contrairement à ce qu’on croit, mais si cela l’est, il y a des stratégies qui peuvent être dans des configurations favorables ou défavorables. Mais il y a peut-être aussi un facteur humain. Cela me rassure toujours que le facteur humain ait un peu de place. La gestion quantitative n’appelle pas forcément de gros moyens. Il en faut un peu et j’imagine qu’on peut quand même mettre en oeuvre des stratégies quantitatives sans forcément se trouver dans une grosse maison ayant des moyens très lourds. Pour notre part, nous avons difficilement accès aux petites ou moyennes sociétés de gestion pour une toute autre raison.
BATS Global Markets va faire une nouvelle tentative d’entrée en Bourse, après avoir essuyé un échec en mars. C’est ce qu’a confié au Handelsblatt le directeur général de BATS Chi-X Europe, Mark Hemsley. «Nous voulons accroître notre trésor de guerre pour d'éventuelles acquisitions», avance le dirigeant. According to Agefi, financial assets of individuals in offshore tax havens total between USD21trn and USD32trn, a study by the Tax Justice Network based on figures from the World Bank, IMF, United Nations and Central Bank has found. The document estimates the lost tax revenue for governments at USD280bn.
According to the Financial Times, the new chairman of the board of directors at Barclays will have to be someone from outside the bank. Investors are putting pressure on the firm to choose a “neutral” person, and Sir Michael Rake, already a board member at Barclays, was forced to pull out of the running at the request of several shareholders. The merger of Old Mutual Asset Managers (UK) and Skandia Investment Group may result in 30 redundancies, a spokesperson for Skandia has confirmed. The firm did not state what jobs would be lost, Money Marketing reports.
For European private investors, the critical size which allows for economies of scale has risen to EUR10m, from EUR5m before 2008, Agefi reports, citing Sébastien Lacroix, managing partner at McKinsey, in charge of the agency’s annual survey fo the sector. The revenue margin (the proportion of earnings to assets) for the sector totalled 83 basis points (bp) in 2011, compared with more than 95 basis points before 2008. To maintain their current profit margins (the proportion of profits to assets) of 24 basis points, private managers will have to maintain a cost margin of less than 60 basis points, the newspaper reports.
A verdict handed down last week by the European Court of Justice has found that mandated management cannot be considered a VAT-exempt securities trading operation, though Deutsche Bank had been exempting it from taxes, Agefi reports. The verdict also states that “portfolio management activity undertaken by Deutsche Bank does not correspond to the notion of management of common investment funds” in the sense of the directive, which refers to funds in FCP format, which are exempt from VAT (except options).

In May 2012, assets in shares in non-money market mutual funds in the euro zone were EUR40bn lower than in April 2012, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced in a statement on Friday. The decline in shares was partially offset by net issues. Assets in shares issued by non-money market mutual funds were down to a total of EUR6.015trn in May 2012, compared with EUR6.055trn one month earlier. In the same period, assets in shares issued by euro zone money market mutual funds rose from EUR972bn to EUR1trn. Net subscriptions to non-money market euro zone securities totalled EUR11bn in May 2012, while net subscriptions to money market mutual funds totalled EUR12bn. In detail, annual growth in shares issued by bond funds totalled 3.8% in May 2012, and net subscriptions totalled EUR23bn. Inversely, the annual variation for equity funds was -3.3%, and net redemptions totalled EUR6bn. For mixed funds, the variation rate was -0.9%, and net redemptions totalledEUR5bn.
AXA Investment Managers (AXA IM) on Friday announced the launch of the AXA WF Universal Inflation Bonds fund, a Luxembourg-registered fund of international inflation-linked bonds. The sub-fund, which is not currently available in France, aims to profit from opportunities in developed and emerging economies. The fund is managed without benchmark constraints by Jonathan Baltora, part of a team dedicated to inflation-linked strategies that manages over USD20bn. The Citywire rankings of the best hedge fund managers, with ratings of AAA to A for their performance, are seeing the entry of new professionals. Among the new entrants this month are Frédéric Cohen (AAA), manager of the OFI Palmares Alpha Drive from OFI Asset Management. The manager has earned returns of 15.11% over the past three years. Gianmarco Mondani, Paolo Longinotti and Roberto Cantaluppi (AAA) from Arkos Capital are also present in the rankings, as is Hugh Hendry (AA), manager of the CF Eclectica Absolute Macro fund.
Demand for precious metals is not letting up, at least for Source products. The European exchange-traded product (ETP) provider (USD9bn in assets under management) on Friday announced that its P-ETC Source Physical Gold has topped USD2.5bn in assets.
CamGestion will be overhauling its product range. A series of mergers will begin in late July, and will continue until the end of the year. On 27 July this year, CamGestion Actions Financières will be merged into the CamGestion Actions Rendement. On 31 Juyl, the firm will merge the CamGestion Obligtions Internationales fund into the CamGestion Obligations Europe. On 4 September, the Valtitres Sicav will bemerged into the Valtitres FCP. On 11 September, CamGestion will merge the Liberté Patrimoine into the CamGestion Active Convictions, and finally on 12 September, the Liberté Actions will be merged into the CamGestion Actions France.
According to figures from IPE, assets under management by French asset management firms on behalf of European institutional investors fell 12.3% in the past twelve months. As of the end of December 2011, French asset management firms had EUR795.3bn in assets under management for institutional investors, compared with EUR893.3bn at the end of 2010. Amundi is bucking the current trend, with an increase in institutional assets between the end of 2010 and the end of 2011, from EUR182bn to EUR210bn, particularly from Italy, Germany and France. Axa IM, for its part, has posted a decline of EUR24.2bn in its assets under management for institutionals in Europe, from EUR109bn in 2010 to EUR84.8bn at the end of 2011.
In the brokerage business at Crédit Agricole, following Cheuvreux and the arrival of Kepler Capital in the capital last week, CLSA has become the next business in the limelight. This time, on Friday 20 July, Crédit Agricole Corporate & Investment Bank (Crédit Agricole CIB) has announced that it is selling 19.9% of capital in the leader in brokerage and equity research in Asia to Citics International and that Crédit Agricole CIB has been given a sale option to allow the Chinese investment bank to acquire the remaining 80.1% of capital in CLSA. The operation, which is the fruit of more than two years of talks, marks a very sharp reduction in the size of the banking group’s brokerage activities. Once the option expires, on 30 June 2013 at the latest, the bank’s presence in this area will limit its participation in the capital of the Kepler Cheuvreux company. In terms of sale price, the French firm sold its 19.9% stake in the capital of CLSA to Citics International for a total of USD310.32m in cash. By comparison, in June 2011, Crédit Agricole CIB and Citics announced that the Chinese bank would be buying a 19.9% stake in CLSA, and 19.9% of capital in Cheuvreux for a total of USD374m. The option granted to the Chinese bank CA CIB, which will allow the French bank to sell the remaining 80.1% of its stake in the capital of CLSA to Citics International, has been set at USD941.68m, pending the approval of supervisory authorities.
The Siparex group has announced the appointment of Stéphanie Courtadon as director of marketing and development for the Proximité Innovation activity. The Proximité Innovation activity represents about half of all assets under management by the Siparex group, a French independent specialist in private equity investments in SMEs of up to EUR500m. Since 2008, Courtadon had been head of marketing and investor relationships at Crédit Agricole Private Equity.
