NewAlpha Asset Management, a specialist in investment in the entrepreneurial finance industry worldwide, on 2 July announced a strategic investment in Crawford Fund Management. Crawford is an independent asset management firm based in Boston, and founded in 2009. The directors, Chris Crawford, Jon Saunders and Scott Utzinger, previously worked together for many years at top asset management firms, such as Stark Investments and Wellington Management Company. During the creation of the firm, the founders invested their own capital alongside external clients. Crawford is continuing a strategy of innovative long/short fundamental investment. The long portfolio enphasis relatively unknown publicly-traded companies, directed by their owners/shareholders, without sectoral constraints. North American small and mid-cap equities generally represent at least two thirds of the portfolio, and the ownership period is generally higher than one year. The short strategy, for its part, concentrates on two fundamental themes: young companies and companies potentially in restructuring. Crawford stands out from its competition by using publicly-traded options on equities to implement positions of this type. This methodology, applied over several econmic cycles, associates fundamental financial analysis into stocks and technical expertise in option trading to reduce the cost of hedging during rising phasis and to maximise capital protection during market downturns.
