On the back of ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China, investors appear to have backed off of European equities for the short term, although they are only marginally reducing their exposure to emerging market equities. In Europe, the subjects of concern are multiple: in addition to tensions with the US administration, investors are also concerned by the European Central Bank’s timetable for normalisation of its monetary policy, the timetable and terms for the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union, and the populist rhetoric of the Italian government. These factors have contributed to net outflows of USD1.1bn from European equity funds in the week to 22 August, according to a weekly survey by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. This 24th consecutive week of negative flows is a sign of mistrust on the part of investors with respect to Europe. Analysts at BofA Merrill Lynch also report that this development looks like a capitulation by investors, insofar as the USd51bn invested in European equities between 2016 and 2018 have been withdrawn since March this year. For emerging market equities, however, the Turkish crisis has clearly not softened interest in equity funds from the region, which have seen only limited divestments in the past week of only USD6.1bn, according to a study by BofA Merrill Lynch. Emerging market bond funds, meanwhile, have seen net outflows of USd1.6bn, the largest in the past eight weeks. In all geographical regions combined, funds dedicated to equities have seen net inflows of USD2.6bn. US equity funds have attracted slightly over USD4bn, while Japanese equity funds have taken in only USD0.2bn.In bonds, the week brought net outflows of USD0.5bn. High yield bond funds saw net outflows of USD0.7bn, while investment grade bond funds have seen modest net inflows of USD0.6bn. European bond funds, for their part, have seen net inflows of over USD1bn for the second consecutive week.It should be noted, lastly, that gold funds have finished the week with outflows of USD1.2bn, the largest since October 2016. In the past four months, the price of gold has fallen 15%, and outflows total USD7bn in the past three months.

The US hotel group LaSalle Hotel Properties on 27 August confirmed in a statement that an improved takeover bid received last week from Pebblebrook Hotel trust may lead to a “higher offer,” further raising the stakes in bidding with Blackstone Group. LaSalle had in June accepted an offer from Blackstone at USd33.50 per share, all in cash, which would have valued the firm at over USD3.7bn.Pebblebrook has made two competing bids, the latest at USD37.80, but with a large part paid in shares, which led LaSalle to continue to recommend the cash offer from Blackstone. Pebblebrook went back on the offensive last week, offering to pay for 30% of the equities that would change hands in cash, up from 20% previously. In a staement, LaSalle says that it is bound by the terms of the agreement signed with Blackstone, and recommends that its board of directors continue to support this offer, but it does not rule out a “higher offer” which would change the situation. Shareholders in the group will vote on the Blackstone bid on 6 September. The two-thirds majority required may be difficult to achieve, to the extent that Pebblebrook has become the fourth-largest shareholder in the group, with a stake of 9.8%. According to Reuters, the speculative fund HG Vora Capital Management, which controls 8.15% of LaSalle, has already announced plans to vote against the Blackstone bid, and the boards of directors of shareholders Glass Lewis & Co and ISS have also recommended rejecting the bid. LaSalle had rejected the unsolicited offer from Pebblebrook on the grounds that its equity and cash components made it more risky for shareholders.

GAM Investments announced that the suspended unconstrained/absolute return bond funds (ARBF) have obtained the applicable approvals to start the liquidation process. All fund investors will receive their proportionate interest in cash from the liquidation process. Each fund expects to be able to make the first payments in early September, returning between 74% and 87% of the Luxembourg and Irish-domiciled UCITS funds, and between 60% and 66% of the assets in the Cayman master fund and the associated Cayman and Australian feeder funds. GAM said that its priority is to maximise value for the fund investors throughout the liquidation process, while ensuring equal and fair treatment to all. Because these funds have a mix of mainly liquid assets and some less liquid assets, GAM is focused on ensuring balance between value maximisation with speed of liquidation. The company expects to make a further distribution for each fund before the end of September, and continue distributions in the coming months, dependent on market conditions.GAM also expects to offer alternative structures for investors who want to remain invested with the ARBF team. A UCITS fund is expected to be available for investors in the coming weeks, and the company is setting up a new Cayman fund as well. Group CEO Alexander S. Friedman said: «The suspension and the subsequent decision to liquidate the ARBF funds has been a difficult process, but necessary to ensure that we deliver on our principles of acting in the best interests of all fund investors and treating them equally and fairly. This does not take away from the fundamental strength of GAM as a diversified asset manager. «We have spent the past few years restructuring GAM into a more efficient business with a less volatile earnings profile, while continuing to build out high performing, specialist strategies that are relevant for our clients. This has made GAM better positioned to weather a challenging environment, and we believe we will continue to attract clients to our platform and deliver value to our investors in the years to come.»
