A consortium led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts will Wednesday announce an investment of USD160m in International Far Eastern Leasing, a Chinese lender specialised in small and mid-sized businesses, sources familiar with the matter have told the Wall Street Journal. The investment will correspond to a 30% stake in the firm, and will be the third operation for the private equity firm in China. KKR is investing alongside the sovereign fund Government of Singapore Investment and the Chinese investment bank China International Capital.
As of the end of September, ETFs worldwide had assets under management totalling a record USD933.49bn, which represents a 4.8% increase over the previous record, set one month earlier (USD891bn). Since the beginning of the year, assets have increased by 31.3%, while the MSCI World index has gained 22.5% in US dollars, Barclays Global Investors (BGI) reports. Net subscriptions to all funds excluding ETFs in January-July, according to Strategic Insight, represented USD97.5bn, while ETFs came in at USD65.7bn. In the first nine months of the year, the number of ETFs increased by 14.3%, to 1,819 products, with 295 new product launches and 72 closures. These funds were listed 3,247 times on 40 stock markets. The three largest promoters remain iShares (the brand from BGI), with 403 ETF funds and USD451.87bn in assets, State Street Global Advisors, with 106 funds and USD138.32bn, and Vanguard, with 40 ETF and USD77.15bn. Currently, according to BGI, approximately 811 ETF launches are underway.
ICR Institutional Investment Management is following its Alpha Multistrategy and Alpha Plus with the launch of a third fund of hedge funds in Spain, entitled Acciones Baja Volatilidad, whose performance objective is the Euribor 1-month plus 500 basis points, with average annual volatility of less than 5%, Funds People reports. The new product may invest in 10 to 30 hedge funds, without exceeding 10% per fund, nor 25% per strategy.
Investment Week reports that Royal London Asset Management has announced that it will convert its range of unit trusts into OEICs (open-ended investment vehicles) gradually, to complete the process in April 2010. Each fund conversion will be subject to the approval of shareholders in the vehicle, but, according to Royal London, the first five conversions will be completed by the end of October. They will be the Sterling Credit, Ethical Bond, UK Speed Situations, UK Mid-Cap Growth and European Income funds. Royal London says the OEIC structure offers more flexibility when new funds are launched. “OEICs are increasingly the preferred investment vehicle of many investors,” says the head of sales at Royal London, Stan Bland.
One in five hedge fund managers misrepresents their fund or its performance to investors during formal due diligence investigations, research from New York University’s Stern School of Business cited by the Financial Times suggests. Managers most commonly misrepresented the amount of money they had entrusted to their funds, their performance and their regulatory and legal histories.
Funds People relays reports in Expansión that Julius Baer is currently studying the possibility of entering the Spanish private banking market, but a spokesperson for the Swiss firm has announced that the timetable has not yet been set for the project. The spokesman added that Julius Baer has not yet decided if it will found a new affiliate or opt for an acquisition.
The merger of the three savings banks Caixa Catalunya, Caixa Manresa and Caixa Tarragona, announced on Tuesday, will result in the creation of the tenth-largest management firm in Spain, with assets of nearly EUR4.46bn, and 212,900 subscribers, Cotizalia reports, on the basis of Inverco statistics for the end of September. Since the beginning of the year, the three asset management firms have registered net subscriptions of EUR552m, and a 13.66% increase in their assets under management, while the industry as a whole has shrunk by 3.03%.
According to Inverco, the association of asset management companies, the number of funds marketed in Spain has shrunk by 154 during the first nine months of 2009, to a total 2,646 products. Almost two thirds of this decrease come frome the rationalisation of the supply by only three providers. Santander’s rang has shrunk by 46 products to 247 funds, Ahorro Corporación’s by 34 at 233 and La Caixa’s by 23 to 179. Banco Sabadell, for his part, closes 17 funds and had only 72 products left at September 30th. BBVA, the number one asset manager, on the other hand added 3 products, at 216.
Fidelity International is releasing its fund of shares in companies that specialise in real assets, Fidelity Funds Global Real Asset Securities (see Newsmanagers of 30 September) in Spain, Cinco Días reports. Sebastián Velasco, managing director of Fidelity International for Spain, Portugal and Latin America, says the product will add a lot of value to active management in key sectors for economic growth.
According to sources familiar with the matter, cited by Global Proxy Watch and relayed by Responsible Investor, RiskMetrics Group, a corporate governance and risk management agency, is said to be about to acquire a second actor in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) arena, KLD Research & Analytics. RiskMetrics already bought the SRI specialist Innovest in February.
BlackRock announced on 9 October that Sallie L. Krawcheck, President of Global Wealth & Investment Management at Bank of America Corporation, and Mark D. Linsz, Corporate Treasurer at Bank of America Corporation, have joined the board at the firm. The two new appointments fill seats on the board left vacant by Brian Moynihan and Daniel Sontag, who have resigned. The board of directors at BlackRock has 16 members, of whom 10 are independent.
Major US banks and securities firms are going to pay their employees about USD140 billion this year, says the Wall Street Journal. It is a record high showing compensation is rebounding despite regulatory scrutiny of Wall Street’s pay culture. Workers at 23 top investment banks, hedge funds, asset managers and stock and commodities exchanges can expect to earn even more than they did the peak year of 2007.

As of the end of September, 432 ETF funds from 13 issuers were listed 480 times for trading on NYSE Euronext, the company states. These products replicate 281 indexes. Since the beginning of the year, the number of ETF products has increased by 26%. In total, 90 ETF ufnds have been admitted to trading, while 6 have been withdrawn. The average spread for all listed ETFs came to 32.53 basis points in September. Average daily trading volumes increased in September by 29.3% over their August levels, to EUR340m, while the number of trades per day rose 7.9%, to 7,749 trades per day. By comparison, the XTF segment of Deutsche Börse currently lists 497 ETFs and has average monthly trading volume of about EUR10bn.
Jupiter Unit Trust Managers Ltd has announced the appointment of Mark Ingram as regional sales manager, completing the reorganisation of Jupiter’s UK wholesale sales team. In his new position at Jupiter, Mark Ingram will be responsible for business development in the South West region, working alongside Jupiter’s established regional sales team, which manages relationships with wealth management IFAs, etc. Mark Ingram joins Jupiter from Credit Suisse Asset Management where he held the position of co-head of UK retail sales. His appointment follows the recruitment of Bryan Bushnell as Business Development Manager, Wealth Management in June. He joined Jupiter from New Star Asset Management.
Private bank RBS Coutts has been affected by the departure of 70 staffers from its Singapore office (more than one quarter of total personnel), many of whom will be likely to join the Swiss firm BSI (Generali group), either in the city-state, or elsewhere in Asia, Börsen-Zeitung reports. RBS Coutts has announced that it is planning to recruit 20 bankers in Asia.
According to statistics from Barclays Global Investors (BGI), assets in European ETF funds at the end of September set a new all-time record of USD204.22bn, an increase of 6.3% over their previous peak of USD192bn, as of 31 August. The record preceding that one dates to 31 July 2008, when assets totaled USD160bn. Since the beginning of the year, assets have increased by 43.2%, while the MSCI Europe index in US dollars has gained 27.4%. In the first seven months of the year, according to Lipper FMI, net subscriptions have totalled USD19.2bn, while all other categories of funds totalled USD122.2bn. As of 30 September, BGI counted 783 ETF funds, listed 1,946 times on 18 stock markets (compared with 21 at the beginning of the year), from 32 issuers. The number of ETF funds has increased by 23.9%, with 174 new products launched. Three issuers share three quarters of the European market. They are BGI, with its iShares brand of ETFs, which has 167 products and assets of USD80.03bn, followed by Lyxor Asset Management (Société Générale), with 100 products and USD42.06bn in assets, and db x-trackers, with 113 ETF funds and assets under management of USD33.71bn. This corresponds to respective market shares for these providers of 39.2%, 20.6%, and 16.5%.
UBS Global Asset Management has parted company with its head of Europe, Middle East and Africa, Gabriel Herrera, a member of the group managing board, says the Wall Street Journal. Mr. Herrera is leaving as part of a restructuring after 22 years at the Swiss bank.
Thomas Romig joined Union Investment on 12 October as head of multi-management. He will be responsible for wealth management products, including funds of funds, and will report to Volker Wohlschieß, head of wealth management and private banking at the asset management firm for the German co-operative banks. Romig was previously head of multi-management at Allianz Global Investors, a firm which he joined from ComInvest Asset Management, where he established the multi-management department.
The families that control Sal. Oppenheim have reduced their stake in Arcandor in several stages, to bring it below 10%, down from 24.9% previously, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports. In 2008, the bank bought nearly one quarter of the retail group for EUR2 per share. Currently, Arcandor shares are worth EUR0.23 each.
The private South African management firm Banque Louis announced a few days ago that it has appointed Patrick Wild as president of the firm, only four months after the firm received its banking license from Finma, the Swiss federal financial market surveillance authority. Banque Louis has no comment on the departure of Wild’s predecessor, Martin Foster, after only four months. The new executive president was previously head of family office operations at Julius Baer and was a manager at UBS in financial planning.
Index provider Dow Jones on october 13th announced it has sold an operating license for the Dow Jones GCC Titans 50 Total Return Index to the National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD). The index will be tracked by an ETF which will be traded on the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange. This will be the first ETF available on the UAE market.

En juillet, août et septembre, une trentaine de sicav ont annoncé des changements de statuts en vue d’une dissolution.Pour réduire ses frais d’audit et de fonctionnement, le milliardaire Ram Bhavnani a décidé fin juin de fusionner deux de ses sicav, Kishoo et Valle Pallín, qui étaient gérée par le Banco Madrid.
Lyxor envisage de lancer d’ici à la fin de l’année un nouvel ETF immobilier, a indiqué Isabelle Bourcier, responsable Monde ETF chez Lyxor Asset Management à l’occasion d’un petit-déjeuner organisé par bfinance.Isabelle Bourcier a par ailleurs déclaré que l’engouement pour les ETF ne constituait pas un phénomène passager. «Il peut y avoir bien entendu un phénomène de mode, mais de mon point de vue cela n’explique pas la progression de ce marché. Ce marché est là pour durer», a-t-elle souligné. Elle relève d’ailleurs que le marché européen dispose d’un potentiel de croissance considérable. Le volume des transactions quotidien sur le marché américain, qui pèse quelque 400 milliards de dollars, est de l’ordre de 50 milliards de dollars alors qu’il culmine en Europe (avec un encours de 125 milliards d’euros) à 1,5 milliard d’euros.Bien entendu, la crise a apporté un certain nombre d’enseignements qu’il convient d’intégrer dans sa politique d’investissement. Il est notamment essentiel de s’assurer de la qualité de la liquidité, la crise ayant bien montré l’importance d’une liquidité maintenue dans toutes les phases de marché.
D’après une étude effectuée par les analystes de MyPrivateBanking.com sur les cinq ans à fin juillet 2009, seuls trois des quinze plus grands gestionnaires mondiaux de fonds d’actions ont réussi à surperformer leurs indices de référence : Deutsche Bank/DWS arrive en tête avec une avance de 4,36 % sur les benchmarks pour 2 fonds analysés, devant BlackRock/Merrill Lynch avec 4 fonds et une surperformance de 3,97 %, suivi de Lombard Odier avec 2 fonds et un gain excédentaire de 1,03 %.Les sous-performances, en revanche, s'échelonnent entre des retards de 4,84 % pour UBS (4 fonds) et de 20,06 % pour Julius Baer (3 fonds). Crédit Agricole, BNP/Fortis et BNP/Parvest arrivent respectivèement en 5ème, 8ème et 11ème position, avec des sous-performances de 5,31 %, 10,00 % et 14,33 %. Goldman Sachs et Sal. Oppenheim n’ont pas pu être classés parce qu’ils n’avaient pas le nombre requis de fonds avec l’historique de performance de 5 ans.Les frais des fonds analysés, qui sont focalisés sur les Etats-Unis, l’Europe, l’Asie ou le monde, s'échelonnent entre 1,08 % et 2,35 %, ce qui n’est pas l’unique raison des mauvais résultats, insiste MyPrivateBanking : on constate en effet des spreads négatifs à deux chiffres, ce qui est donc dû à de mauvaises décisions d’investissement.Dès lors, les analystes de MyPrivateBanking recommandent aux clients des gestionnaires de fortune de ne pas investir que dans les fonds présentant une surperformance sur plusieurs années et de diversifier leur portefeuille en souscrivant à des ETF. De plus, les investisseurs seraient bien inspirés d’exiger de leurs conseillers une transparence complète concernant l’allocation, la qualité et les coûts des fonds du portefeuille.
