In addition to the arrival of Maxime Carmignac as head of the Carmignac Market Neutral fund, the asset management firm, whose headquarters are located on the place Vendôme in Paris, has announced the arrival of Charles Zerah as a fixed income manager. Zerah, 36, was previously head of all emerging markets fixed income management at CAAM, in the team led by Bruno Crastes in London. Zerah will arrive in Paris in March 2010, and will take over as head of the Carmignac Global Bond fund, whose results were particularly disappointing in 2009: the fund lost 12.39%.
Standard Life Investments has announced the appointment of Steve Weeple as managing director, global equities (USA). Weeple is currently head of US equities at Standard Life Investments; this position will now be occupied by Jeff Morris. Weeple will continue to be based in Boston, and will report to Lance Phillips, head of global equities.
Dominic Scriven, one of the founders of the Vietnam-based firm Dragon Capital, is taking up the reins at the firm, replacing John Shrimpton, also one of the partners responsible for founding Dragon, who has resigned, according to Asian Investor. The firm manages about USD1.5bn, largely in closed-ended funds, and has a local asset management license. The firm is invested in over 50 Vietnamese companies.
Pictet & Cie will hand the management of a new convertible bond fund to Philippe Jabre. The Paris office of the Swiss private bank has confirmed the news, reported in the Swiss newspaper Le Temps this Wednesday. A former star trader from GLG in London, Jabre moved to Geneva in late 2006, where he founded Jabre Capital Partners, which manages USD4bn in assets.

Agefi reports that Prudential on Wednesday, 6 January concluded a strategic partnership with the Asian bank United Overseas Bank (UOB), and has announced the acquisition of its life insurance activities in Singapore. The group, which already earned nearly one third of its revenues in Asia, will take over Singapore life insurance activities totalling SGD428m (EUR213m). Prudential has also formed a twelve-year agreement with the Asian bank, to create one of the largest banking-insurance operations in the region. It will depend on the network of 404 UOB branches to distribute life insurance products in Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. In Asia, a major area of development for the insurer, the group is already present in 13 markets, with 11 million clients in life insurance and GBP16.4bn in assets under management as of the end of June.
Sotiris Boutsis has taken over as manager of the Global Financial Services fund from Fidelity, replacing Tal Eloya, who took over the fund in early 2008, and who will now put his abilities to use beyond the financial sector, Investment Week reports. Boutsis joined Fidelity International as an analyst in 2002, and then in 2006 joined the team in charge of the pan-European financial sector, covering British and Irish banks. At the end of November 2009, the Global Financial Services fund had EUR403m in assets, and was 37% invested in US equities, and 19% in British equities. Its largest positions were Deutsche Börse (4.7%), HSBC (4.5%), and PNC (3.9%).
Taiwan’s Bureau of Labour Insurance (LBI) has handed out three international management mandates totalling USD600m, Asian Investor reports. The LBI retained three American firms: Pimco, Standish Mellon, and Wellington, to manage allocations of international bonds. Each firm will receive USD200bn for a period of five years. Pimco and Wellington have more established presence on the Taiwanese market, particularly for fixed income mandates. However, Standish is a newcomer which is showing some strength in the Asian institutional market.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced on Tuesday that it is dropping its case against Vanguard Group, Inc., as the manager has agreed to pay USD300,000 to a plaintiff and provide anti-discrimination training to all of its employees in Malvern, Pennsylvania. In its suit, the EEOC accused Vanguard of having refused to hire a woman with an MBA degree and 14 years of experience in the profession as a financial planning manager based in Charlotte, North Carolina, because she is black. Vanguard preferred a less qualified white applicant. The manager has not admitted wrongdoing in the case.
Source on 6 January announced the launch of nine new sectoral United States ETF funds. They will for the first time give European investors access to the S&P US Select Sector indices, via ETFs listed in Europe which comply with UCITS III standards. Source has worked in partnership with S&P to ensure that the existing S&P indices comply with the UCITS III directive, to create the new S&P Select Sector Capped 20% indices. The nine indices include the discretionary consumer goods sector, inelastic consumer goods, energy, financial, health, industrials, materials, technology, and utilities. Sectoral US ETFs have existed since December 1998, and are particularly popular in the United States. They currently represent assets of USD76bn, which is equivalent to 12% of all assets managed in ETF funds in the United States. The nine existing SPDR US Select Sector ETFs represent 41% of all assets managed in sectoral ETFs in the United States, with a daily trading volume corresponding to 59% of total average daily trading volumes on the US sectoral market. Due to restrictions on owning shares in or making trades on US-listed funds, many European investors have been unable to access this market, and the liquidity that comes with it.
Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP) has announced the launch of the SWIP Multi-Manager Optimal Multi-Asset fund on the British retail market. The product comes as an addition to the firm’s multi-management range, and will be managed by Mark Harries and Simon Wood. The performance objective for the fund is set at LIBOR +6%. The product will invest in all asset classes.
In a sign that German real estate fund managers have been once at last returning to the City to invest in the past few months, the Frankfurt-based management firm SEB Asset Management has announced that it is spending EUR39.7m to acquire a 4,991 square metre building located at number 1 Threadneedle Street in London from the Wellcome Trust. Most of the property will be added to the SEB ImmoPortfolio Target Return fund; it is leased until February 2014 to the law firm Halliwells. The SEB ImmoPortfolio Target Return fund is an open-ended real estate fund reserved primarily for institutional and high net worth private investors. Its assets currently total EUR788.1m. It is invested in 40 properties located in 12 countries. Since its launch in October, 2001, it has earned average annual performance of 8.1%.
If net inflows to the four largest providers of ETF funds in January-November 2009 are added up, the total comes to nearly EUR8.41bn, 57.35 times as much as the total net subscriptions registered for all open-ended funds in the same period (EUR146.61m). These statistics from the BVI association of asset management firms reveal that, in the period under review, db x-trackers (Deutsche Bank) alone attracted EUR4.84bn in subscriptions, to total EUR24.4bn in assets as of the end of November, while ETFlab (Deka) attracted EUR2.13bn (its assets totalled EUR4.14bn), and Commerz Derivatives Funds Solutions posted net inflows of EUR1.43bn, for assets of EUR3.77bn as of 30 November. BGI, which on 1 December became a part of BlackRock, with its iShares brand of ETFs, has posted only EUR10.24bn in net subscriptions, but its assets total EUR18.86bn. The first eleven months of 2009 were not brilliant ones for the major asset management firms: Allianz Global Investors (AGI) has seen net outflows of EUR1.29bn, despite net subscriptions of EUR5.07bn for Pimco Europe, and Deka (savings banks) has seen outflows of EUR6.58bn. Union (co-operative banks) and Pioneer (UniCredit) have seen net outflows of EUR1.73bn and EUR1.22bn, respectively. The DB/DWS (Deutsche Bank) ensemble has posted net subscriptions of EUR3.43bn, thanks to the good results for ETFs at db x-trackers.
Aberdeen Asset Management is in the final stage of talks to buy parts of Royal Bank of Scotland’s asset-management division, The WSJ said, citing people familiar with the matter. The asset manager would pay between GBP80 million and GBP100 million for the portions of the business it deems most attractive.
Mark Connolly, executive director of distribution & client services at Standard Life Investments (SLI), has been recruited as director of fixed income by Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP), where he will report directly to Dean Buckley, managing director. SWIP’s bond assets currently total over GBP70bn. Meanwhile, Andrew Tunks, who has been serving as interim director of FI management since heavy personnel losses in late August 2009, when Alliance Trust recruited four directors from the division (including Rod Davidson, head of the team), will remain in charge of the FI investment process and the transfer of bond funds from Insight to SWIP. In November, SWIP had already added to its bond team (see Newsmanagers of 25 November).

Aviva Investors a annoncé mardi 5 janvier l’acquisition de River Road Asset Management, une société américaine spécialisée dans la gestion actions de type «value» affichant 3,6 milliards de dollars sous gestion fin novembre 2009.River Road AM, qui détient des actifs bruts de 6 milliards de dollars au 31 décembre 2008, restera basé à Louisville (Kentucky) et sera rattaché à Aviva Investors Amérique du Nord (Aviva Investors North America - “AINA”). «L’objectif de cette acquisition vise à soutenir le développement de l’activité pour compte de tiers institutionnels d’Aviva Investors en conjuguant son expertise existante de la gestion Taux en Amérique du Nord avec les capacités d’investissement sur les marchés Actions de River Road Asset Management», précise un communiqué de l’assureur.De son côté, River Road AM pourra proposer à ses clients, notamment européens, des OPCVM investis dans des produits de taux et gérés par Aviva Investors. Aviva est le 5e assureur mondial (*), avec 50 millions de clients répartis en Europe, en Amérique du Nord et dans la zone Asie-Pacifique. Il affiche un chiffre d’affaires total de 64,3 milliards d'€ et 393 milliards d’actifs sous gestion au 31 décembre 2008. (*) sur la base des primes brutes mondiales émises au 31 décembre 2008.
Dans un communiqué publié lundi 5 janvier au soir, TCW Group (Société Générale) annonce avoir volontairement retiré son fonds UST/TCW Senior Mortgage Securities du programme PPIP du Trésor des Etats-Unis. Ce fonds, qui affiche environ 500 millions de dollars d’encours et dont le premier closing a eu lieu le 30 septembre, sera «liquidé de manière ordonnée» et le capital redistribué aux souscripteurs.Marc I. Stern, CEO de TCW, a souligné que cette liquidation pourra s’effectuer au mieux des intérêts des investisseurs compte tenu à la fois du fait que le fonds n’en était qu’au début de sa phase d’investissement et des changements intervenus récemment dans l'équipe de gestion.Le Trésor avait fait jouer la clause du changement de gérant (key-man clause) après le licenciement du directeur de l’investissement Jeff Gundlach.
Après le TCW Emerging Markets Income Fund, un produit obligataire spécialiste de la dette souveraine et des obligations d’entreprises de pays émergents, TCW Group (filiale de la Société Générale) vient de lancer un autre «mutual fund» marchés émergents, mais axé cette fois sur les actions, le TCW Emerging Markets Equities Fund.Selon Chuck Baldiswieler, president & CEO de TCW Funds, ce fonds affichant 1,71 % de frais sur encours sera géré par Mark Madden et Dave Robbins. Les gérants, qui bénéficieront de l’aide d’une équipe de cinq analystes, se focaliseront sur des sociétés bien gérées de toutes tailles de capitalisations et auront pour tâche de se concentrer sur les perspectives de croissance avec un biais value.Mark Madden a rejoint TCW en 2009. Il était auparavant lead portfolio manager chez Ninth Wave Capital Management après avoir géré de 2004 à 2007 quelque 14 milliards de dollars d’actifs pays émergents chez OppenheimerFunds.
The Wall Street Journal rapporte qu’UBS a promu Charlotte Burkeman et Jon Yalmokas comme directeurs commerciaux des activités de courtage principal aux Etats-Unis. Ils conserveront leur attributions actuelles, respectivement global head of capital introduction et head of equity-derivatives sales. Ils seront directement subordonnés à John Laub, head of U.S. prime services.
D’après IndexUniverse, on comptait aux Etats-Unis seulement 14 ETF actifs pour un encours de 93 millions de dollars au 1er décembre, pour 743 milliards de dollars d’actifs dans 809 ETF traditionnels, rapporte The Wall Street Journal. Toutefois, le marché des ETF actifs semble devoir connaître une bonne croissance : T. Rowe Price et John Hancock Funds ont demandé l’agrément pour en lancer plusieurs, tandis que Vanguard et Putnam ont indiqué être intéressés. Quant à Pimco (Allianz) il a lancé récemment deux ETF obligataires actifs et a l’intention d’en lancer au minimum trois de plus.Les deux plus gros ETF actifs sont le Pimco Enhanced Short Maturity Strategy, avec 45 millions de dollars, d’après Morningstar, suivi du Dent Tactical, avec 23 millions de dollars. Tous les autres fonds de la catégorie ont moins de 10 millions de dollars d’encours.
Tant les institutionnels que les particuliers peuvent désormais souscrire au Lazard Global Listed Infrastructure Portfolio, un mutual fund qui vient d'être lancé par Lazard Asset Management (LAM). Il s’agit d’un produit à gestion active se focalisant sur des sociétés dont la capitalisation boursière dépasse les 250 millions de dollars.L'équipe de gestion dirigée par John Mulquiney et Warryn Robertson se concentrera sur les actions de sociétés possédant des infrastructures présentant comme caractéristique la «longévité» de l'émetteur, un faible risque de perte en capital et des recettes liées à l’inflation. De plus, LAM veillera à couvrir en grande partie le risque de change.Actuellement, la plate-forme Global Listed Infrastructure de LAM représente un encours de 1,98 milliard de dollars pour le compte de clients institutionnels.
Lundi, WisdomTree Investments a annoncé que sa filiale Wisdom Tree Asset Management sera le conseiller et Mellon Capital management le «subadvisor» de son 52ème ETF, le International Hedged Equity ETF (HEDJ), qui réplique le WisdomTree DEFA International Hedged Equity Index. Ce nouveau produit offre aux investisseurs américains la possibilité de s’exposer aux actions européennes, d’Australasie et d’Extrême-Orient tout en neutralisant l’impact des taux de change des monnaies locales par rapport au dollar. L’ETF affiche une commission de gestion annuelle de 0,58 %.
Selon la dernière livraison du Hedge Fund Monitor de Bank of America-Merrill Lynch et sur la base des «13F-filings», l’exposition brute des hedge funds américains aux actions a augmenté de 14 % au troisième trimestre 2009 par rapport à avril-juin, pour ressortir à 825 milliards de dollars. En termes nets, cette exposition a même opéré un bond en avant de 130 % à 95 milliards de dollars. Sur cette base, les hedge funds contrôlaient 4 % du flottant de la capitalisation boursière. Parallèlement, BoA-ML a constaté une augmentation à 1,2 de l’effet de levier «long» ce qui est voisin du niveau constaté pour le second semestre 2008 tout en demeurant inférieur à la valeur de 1,7 % enregistrée pour 2007.Enfin, BoA-ML précise que son Hedge Funds Generals Index a gagné 62 % sur un an, battant ainsi le S&P 500 de 40 points. Cet indice est composé de manière équipondérée des 20 actions dans lesquelles les hedge funds sont le plus investis en «long». Cet indice calculé depuis juin 2008 a été développé du fait qu’une étude a montré que les lignes principales (core holdings) des hedge funds représentent environ 80 % de la performance de ces fonds. Sur la période de rétropolation (backtesting) entre juin 2003 et juin 2008, l’indice Merrill Lynch a régulièrement battu le S&P 500 de 0,9 point par mois.
A fin décembre, l’encours des fonds d’investissement en Chine ressortait à 2.680 milliards de yuans ou 392 milliards de dollars, ce qui représente un bond en avant de 37,9 % par rapport au niveau atteint douze mois auparavant, rapporte Z-Ben Advisors. Ce gonflement est attribuable en grande partie à l’effet de marché, l’indice CSI 300 ayant signé un gain de 95,8 % l’an dernier.2009 a été caractérisé par d’importants retraits des fonds obligataires au premier semestre, les souscriptions se concentrant sur les gestionnaires actions qui ont affiché les meilleurs performances. Sans le lancement d’ETF et autres produits indiciels, le secteur aurait subi des remboursements nets. D’une manière générale, les gagnantes de 2009 ont été les plus grosses sociétés de gestion, tandis que les moyennes et les petites ont plus souvent perdu des parts de marché qu’elles n’en ont gagné.
Le conseil d’administration d’Euroclear a annoncé le 5 janvier la nomination de Tim Howell, responsable mondial de HSBC Securities Services, en tant que directeur exécutif. Il remplace à ce poste Pierre Francotte qui avait fait part de sa décision de quitter l’entreprise en juin dernier.Tim Howell est membre du board d’Euroclear depuis 2007 et assure par ailleurs la présidence du comité des risques.
Selon L’Agefi suisse, Credit Suisse va renforcer cette année son activité de banque d’affaires en Pologne et notamment de négoce d’actions avec l’objectif de devenir l’un des principaux traders de la Bourse de Varsovie.
