Eight other asset management firms hold only one stake. Santander Asset Management holds three stakes, Espirito Santo Gestión has two, and Popular Gestión also two. But the largest of these stakes come to 1.5%, 2%, and 1.2%, respectively.

For the Paris office, net inflows so far this year have totalled EUR300m, while demand is concentrated on Euro zone credit and high added value products such as the European Special Situations, managed by Leon Howard-Spink. The sub-fund of the Luxembourg Sicav Schroder ISF is celebrating its third birthday, with assets of EUR583m, and a portfolio of 49 positions and a turnover rate of about 50-55%. Without being a special situations fund in the strict sense of the term (recovery, mergers and acquisitions, etc), the product relies on stock-picking to generate performance, with measured bets (never more than 3 ½ % for a single position), and thus a diversified portfolio, so as not to be caught off guard by unexpected movements, and also to reduce volatility. The objective is to outperform the MSCI Europe index by 3 to 6 percentage points each year. As of 30 April, and since the launch of the fund, the objective has been met, with ouperformance (for C class shares) of 5.3 points, with a loss of 30.55%, compared with 35.84% for the index. In addition, the fund also outperforms its peer group by 7.8 points. In the first four months of the year, gains have totalled 4.19%, compared with 2.13% for the index.

Products of this kind are being offered by S-Broker (savings banks), CortalConsors (BNP Paribas), comdirect (Commerzbank) and DAB bank (HypoVereinsbank). Savings investors have to watch fees closely nowadays, as those who pay, for example, 25 Euros per month into an account at comdirect are charged a commission of EUR2.60, or more than 10%. However, MaxBlue, the online broker from Deutsche Bank, does not charge fees, but only offers seven house ETFs.

Newsmanagers: how do you see your activities developing in the next few months?Manooj Mistry: We have been active on the ETF distribution market since January 2007, and present in the French market in this niche since February 2008. Today, db x-trackers manages more than EUR21bn in ETFs on 5 European stock markets, and has a market share of 17% in Europe. We are one of the three largest actors on the European ETF market, and are planning to stay that way. Activities at db x-trackers grew be 103% in 2008, and I think we will be able to maintain the same growth rate for 2009.We are always working to enrich our product range as much as possible, and to keep it as diversified as possible. It is this richness of offerings which makes us strong, and that is what we want to strengthen further to make ourselves stand out from our competitors. Our ETFs withstood redemption demands well as the markets collapsed in 2008.Newsmanagers: What are the major advantages of investment in ETFs for institutionals?Manooj Mistry : Institutionals are changing their approach to the construction of portfolios. The are now increasingly turning to asset allocation models. This way, they can use ETFs like bricks to construct an allocation all their own, and place them in parallel or in complement to traditional funds, to render their portfolios more diversified and more flexible.Flexibility is also one of the key advantages of ETFs for institutionals. ETFs allow them, for example, to be exposed to various geographical regions, without necessarily having the expertise internally. They also allow institutionals to have a very precise sectoral coverage.Within asset allocation, ETFs can also be a way to provide strategic allocation (for the core portion of the portfolio), or a tactical allocation (in the satellite portion).Newsmanagers: What types of ETFs are you planning to launch in the near future?Mistry. We would like to continue to offer the most diversified range possible to allow our clients to pick and choose the products they need for their allocations. This Thursday, we launched 14 new ETFs on Euronext Paris, bringing the number of products we offer on this market to 37. Among the new ETFs are 10 products which did not net exist in France in this form. Many of these are short ETFs on sectors or the FTSE.For the launches we are planning, we are looking at opportunities in leveraged ETFs in particular. In Germany, we recently launched a hedge funds ETF.We are also preparing to launch an ETF designed with S&P in the next two months, which will track the performance of the most carbon efficient companies. In the past few months, we have seen strong interest from institutional investors for European equities ETFs, and our ETF specialised in commodities, whose assets have risen from EUR250m to EUR500m since the beginning of the year. Another strong trend is that niche ETFs are developing rapidly. Our Sharia ETF, for example, has been very well-received.
