On Thursday, Vanguard announced that F. William McNabb III, who is currently president & CEO of the asset management firm (USD1.3trn in assets), will combine his responsibilities as CEO with the new position of Chairman, which he will take over from John J. Brennan on 1 January. McNabb also succeeded Brennan in the position of CEO in August 2008.
Asian Investor reports that Chris Keogh is moving from Beijing to Tokyo, as co-head of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, a new position which includes coordination of activities between Japan, South Korea, and China. Client interest in these markets underlies the decision by Goldman Sachs to deepen its involvement there, according to Pliver Bolitho, whose position as managing director in charge of Asia ex Japan now includes Japan. Bolitho, who will oversee Keogh, also reveals that the firm is observing an increase in investment and business flowing between South Korea and Japan. Keogh was previously adviser to the president of Goldman Sachs Gao Hua Securities in Beijing.
According to the issue of “Format” to be released this Friday, F&C is about to acquire a majority stake in the Austrian firm C-Quadrat, fondsprofessionell reports. The British asset manager would buy the stakes owned by the two largest individual shareholders, Alexander Schütz and Thomas Riess, who control 23.6% and 23.3%, respectively, as well as the stake held by AvW Gruppe (32.65), which has had to be transferred to Capital Bank, as AvW is experiencing some financial difficulties. The stakes are valued at about EUR35m.
The iShares 10+ Year Credit Bond Fund and the iShares 10+ Year Government/Credit Bond Fund have become the first two ETFs of the iShares brand to be launched by BlackRock since it closed its acquisition of Barclays Global Investors. Both funds charge fees of 0.20%. The first product replicates the BofA Merrill Lynch 10+ year US Corporate & Yankees index (1,093 issues), while the second replicates the BofA Merrill Lynch 10+ year US Corporate & Government (1,266 issues).
According to statistics from BlackRock (see Newsmanagers of 12 November), as of the end of October there were 801 ETF funds from 12 issuers listed 2,001 times on 18 stock exchanges in Germany. In the first ten months of the year, assets under management have increased 44.2%. In the period under review, 193 ETF funds have been launched, and 24 funds have been closed, while the number of funds in pre-launch development totalled 56. By country, Germany is by far the largest market in Europe with 329 primary listings and 590 secondary listings, and assets totalling USD88.43bn, ahead of France (222 primary listings and 392 secondary ones), with USD49.72bn, and the United Kingdom (136 primary and 329 secondary listings) with USD42.58bn. Germany alone accounts for 43% of the total. The top three countries, including France and the United Kingdom, represent 87.93% of the European total. With USD18.94bn in Switzerland added in, the top four markets weigh in at USD197.67bn, or 96.17% of the total. Italy has 14 primary listings and 319 secondary listings, but only USD1.65bn in assets, while Slovenia, with one primary listing and one secondary listing, has USD0.01bn.
According to preliminary estimates, the Credit Suisse/Tremont hedge fund index finished the month of November with gains of 2.29%, after stagnating in November. Some quantitative global macro hedge funds posted their best results of the year in November, with gains of 3.93%. Among the winning strategies of the month were managed futures (4.59%), event-driven (1.90%), long/short equity (2.38%), and emerging markets (1.89%).
Pictet Asset Management has announced the appointment of Klaus Bockstaller as head of the emerging markets team for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and Latin America. He previously held a similar position at Baring Asset Management. The management firm has also announced that it has appointed Hugo Bain as senior manager of the PF (Lux) Eastern Europe fund. He joins the firm from Merrill Lynch.
L’Agefi Switzerland reports that the asset management arm of the Aegon insurance group, which is present particularly in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States, has made its debut on the Swiss market. The first wave of licensed products includes bond funds. A small team shares responsibility for management of four funds available in Switzerland, including David Roberts (Investment Grade Global Bond and Strategic Global Bond), Phil Milburn (High Yield Global Bond and Strategic Global Bond) and Euan McNeil (Euro Bond). The Strategic Global Bond may invest in investment grade bonds (which six months ago accounted for 90% of its investments, and now total around 70%), but may also add to this investment in speculative debt such as inflation-linked bonds. It aims to generate returns from six sources: asset allocation, duration management, positioning on the return curve, sectoral allocation, selection of securities and ratings preferences.
In November, funds on sale in Sweden posted net subscriptions of SEK11.4bn (EUR1.1bn), according to the most recent statistics from the Swedish fund association fondbolagens förening. As in previous months, investors preferred equities funds, which saw net inflows of EUR4.6bn. Since the beginning of the year, this category of funds has attracted SEK84.7bn in net inflows, out of net subscriptions of SEK98bn for the sector as a whole. In November, all categories of funds posted net subscriptions, except hedge funds (-SEK0.6bn).
Deutsche Börse has widened the range of products available on Xetra: since Thursday, investors may trade Exchange Traded Notes (ETN). The first two listings are iPath products from Barclays Capital, which replicate the volatility indices S&P 500 VIX Short Term Futures Index TR and S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures Index TR. The two German-registered products corresponding to these indices, the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Index ETN and iPath S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures Index ETN, charge fees of 0.89%. Along with ETCs, these two ETN products represent a new class of products in Frankfurt, known as Exchange Traded Products (ETP). Currently, Deutsche Börse lists 543 ETFs, 141 ETCs, and now 2 ETNs.

Speaking at the climate summit in Copenhagen, George Soros unveiled a plan on Thursday to give poor countries access to USD100bn in financial assistance to deal with the threat of climate change. The money would come from the International Monetary Fund. Special drawing rights or SDRs could be lent to developing countries, through a “green fund” set up for the purpose.
On 4 December, UBS was granted sales licenses in Germany for the Climate Change Sustainable P-acc and Sustainable Global Leaders (EUR) P-acc sub-funds of its Luxembourg Sicav UBS (Lux) Equity, launched on 27 November, which carries an all-in fee of 2.04%. The first of these two funds will invest in businesses of the renewable and alternative energies sector, as well as in energy efficiency, as well as in energy transport, low energy consumption real estate property management, and development of energy-efficient lighting systems. The portfolio will include 40 to 70 positions, selected from a universe of 500 shares worldwide. The Sustainable Global Leaders fund, with 40-60 positions selected from a universe of 1,000 businesses, will invest primarily in four themes: climate change (38%), demography (25%), development (25%), and water (12%).

Goldman Sachs vient d’obtenir la licence lui permettant de proposer des services de gestion de fonds onshore et de conseil en finance d’entreprise en Malaisie, indique Asian Investor. La banque ouvrira un bureau dans le pays, à Kuala Lumpur, au cours du premier semestre 2010. Cette décision de la part du régulateur s’inscrit dans la volonté de la Malaisie de libéraliser le marché de la finance locale.
L’ancien responsable de l’investissement du fonds souverain Korea Investment Corporation (KIC), Guan Ong, vient de lancer un nouveau produit à Singapour, rapporte Asian Investor.Sa société Blue Rice Investment Management (Brim) propose un produit de performance absolue, le Brim Asian Credit Fund. Il espère que le fonds puisse gérer quelque 30 à 50 millions de dollars d’ici au début 2010. Sa capacité devrait tourner autour du milliard de dollars. Il s’intéresse en priorité aux obligations corporate asiatiques libellées en dollar et autres devises internationales. Guan Ong a précisé qu’il évite délibérément les devises locales pour ne pas ajouter le risque de change au risque de crédit. Il privilégie le papier en catégorie d’investissement et évite les situations spéciales. Son prime broket est Credit Suisse, les services d’administration étant pris en charge par Deutsche Bank.Le fonds, qui peut recourir au levier (deux fois le portefeuille), vise un rendement de 10 à 15% en 2010.
Après le départ de Dario Frigerio de la direction de Pioneer Investments, le comité nominations d’UniCredit, la maison mère de la société de gestion, «a exprimé un avis positif au conseil d’administration concernant la désignation de Roger Yates comme nouveau responsable des activités de gestion d’actifs du groupe», rapporte Il Sole – 24 Ore. Agé de 52 ans, le Britannique Roger Yates a été pendant dix ans, de 1999 à 2008, CEO de Henderson Group. Selon le journal italien, cette nomination reflète la volonté du groupe italien de miser sur la relance et la valorisation de Pioneer, qui ne serait donc plus à vendre.

Pour Alberto Ruiz, Omega va s’efforcer d'éviter dans toute la mesure du possible d’investir dans des fonds qui pratiquent les «side-pockets», parce que ce genre de disposition est souvent abusif. En revanche, il comprend parfaitement que les gestionnaires instaurent des «gates» pour protéger les investisseurs.Omega Gestión de Inversiones a obtenu en octobre 2006 un agrément de la CNMV pour gérer des hedge funds de droit espagnol. Elle en a lancé deux, dont le Laredo Inversión Libre, dont la performance sur un an se situe à 8,20% et l’Alphaville, qui a été mis sur le marché en octobre.
Les hedge funds se préparent à clôturer la plus belle année depuis une décennie, selon HedgeWeek. En novembre, selon les données de Hedge Fund Research, l’indice HFRI Fund Weighted Composite a gagné 1,75 % en novembre, soit une performance de 18,8 % depuis le début de l’année. La stratégie macro a réalisé la plus forte performance (+2,54 %), contre un gain de 0,73 % pour la stratégie «relative value», la moins bonne en novembre.
Selon les chiffres de HedgeFund.net publiés mardi 8 décembre, après avoir augmenté de 3,39 %, les actifs des hedge funds ont passé la barre des 2.000 milliards de dollars en novembre 2009, un niveau qui n’avait plus été atteint depuis novembre 2008.Dans le détail, l’augmentation de l’encours est due à la fois à un effet performance et à l’apport d’une nouvelle collecte. Ainsi, le rendement des actifs a fait augmenter les actifs de 40,5 milliards, tandis que les investisseurs ont alloué 26,3 milliards de dollars aux hedge funds. L’enquête de Hedgefund.net relève également que novembre est le 7ème mois consécutif où les hedge funds ont enregistré des souscriptions nettes. Durant cette période,119,91 milliards de dollars ont été invetis dans ces fonds. Enfin, les performances des hedge funds ont été positives en novembre, tirée par les stratégies menées sur les produits de base et les stratégies axées sur les marchés émergents. La stratégie long / short equity, de son côté, a sous-performé l’indice S & P 500 de plus de 450 points de base.
Peter Langeman, president et CEO de Mutual Series Group, va prendre avec effet immédiat la gestion du Franklin Mutual Global Discovery Fund en remplacement d’Anne Gudefin et de Charles Lahr qui ont quitté l’entreprise le 4 décembre pour rejoindre Pimco (Allianz). BNY Mellon Asset Servicing a annoncé avoir obtenu du néerlandais Pensioenfonds Horeca & Catering (PH&C) un mandat de conservation et de services à valeur ajoutée de 2,8 milliards d’euros. PH&C est le fonds de pension des secteurs de la restauration, de l’hôtellerie et des traiteurs, avec 800.000 adhérents et 30.000 entreprises affiliées.
Le conseil d’administration de la Banque Julius Baer a nommé mercredi deux nouveaux membres du comité exécutif avec effet au 1er janvier. Giovanni Flury succède à Bernard Keller comme directeur de marché pour les régions Tessin et Italie tandis qu’Yves Robert-Charrue devient le directeur du groupe Investment Solutions de la banque. Il succédera à Boris F.J. Collardi, le CEO du groupe Julius Baer, qui a réorganisé cette «activité majeure» de la Banque Julius Baer et l’a dirigée durant l’année 2009. Yves Robert-Charrue a rejoint Julius Baer début 2009 en tant que directeur de la gestion des fonds et des produits, responsable de la gestion au niveau mondial de l’ensemble de la gamme des fonds de placement. L’impétrant «a acquis une solide expérience auprès de Credit Suisse», précise le communiqué.
La boutique de gestion alternative Future Capital Partners (FCP, 6 milliards de livres d’encours) a annoncé avoir embauché Piers Denne comme head of sales & marketing avec des compétences larges pour conduire la stratégie de développement. Un poste nouvellement créé lié à la nomination récente de Max Nardulli à la tête du pôle International Sales and Distribution et qui devrait permettre de pousser les deux de Cheyne Capital sur le marcghé britannique.Tom Wiggin était précédemment chez Deutsche Bank à Londres depuis plus d’une dizaine d’années. Il était récemment managing director pour les relations avec les hedge funds en Europe.
