Kai Brunko has left ING Real Estate Investment Management Germany, to take on the newly-created position of asset manager for the retail sector at LaSalle Investment Management in Munich, from 1 July.
The head of institutional distribution at ComStage ETF (Commerzbank), Levente Kulcsar, on 1 July became director and head of ETF activities for Germany and Austria at Credit Suisse. Meanwhile, Annabelle Wegner is leaving RBS/ABN Amro, where she worked in the structured products team, to join the ETF division of Credit Suisse. ETF assets at Credit Suisse represent CHF12bn, or EUR8.4bn. The ETF product range from Credit Suisse currently includes 31 funds with a sales license in Germany.
Société Générale Corporate & Investment Banking announced on Thursday that it has added to its range of ETF services for European institutional investors, extending its ETF lending and borrowing service, and acting as market maker for five new series of options based on French-registered ETF funds from the Société Générale affiliate Lyxor Asset Management. The funds concerned are Lyxor ETF DJ Stoxx 600 Banks, Lyxor ETF DJ Stoxx 600 Oil & Gas, Lyxor ETF DJ Stoxx 600 Basic Resources, Lyxor ETF DJ Stoxx 600 Telecommunications and Lyxor ETF China Enterprise.
The recent turbulence on the markets has left its mark on funds. According to statistics from the British investment management association (IMA), net inflows in May fell below GBP1bn, to GBP948m, down 56% from April. This is the first time since November 2008 (18 months previously) that this variable has fallen below the GBP1bn mark. In May 2009, net inflows totalled GBP2.84bn. Assets under management as of the end of May totalled GBP492.6bn, down 3.5% from their peak in April (GBP510.6bn), but up 25% compared with their levels in May 2009. The most popular sector was absolute returns, with net inflows of GBP181m. This category, introduced in April 2008, has been in the top fifth of all strategies in 21 months out of 26. Distribution platforms have increased their market share to 39%, an increase of 1% compared with April, and 5% compared with January.
Henderson Plc on Thursday, 1 July announced that it the Irish-registered OEIC fund New Star European Growth has been integrated into the Luxembourg Sicav Henderson Horizon, as of 18 June. The fund will now be known as the Henderson Horizon European Growth Fund. The mutual fund, managed by Richard Pease and Simon Rowe, has assets of EUR84.2m. The operation follows the acquisition of New Star Asset Management by the Henderson Plc group in 2009. Threadneedle has appointed Quentin Fitzsimmons as lead manager for two bond funds, the Threadneedle Absolute Return Bond and Target Return funds, previously managed by Peter Annwright and Stuart Frost, who have recently left the firm to join RWC. Fitzsimmons, who has been head of government bonds since 2003, made significant contributions to the growth of absolute return strategies, and it would be an exaggeration to attribute the success of these strategies solely to the two managers who have moved to RWC, Threadneedle says in a statement. Assets in the two funds concerned totalled over EUR2.3bn as of the end of March, within fixed income (EUR22bn in assets under management in total). Threadneedle has also recruited Vladimir Gerasimia, who will join the team specialised in emerging market debts, a,dn who previously worked at Fortis Investments. Another new arrival, Richard Stevens, previously of Old Mutual Asset Managers, joins the government bond team.
On Thursday evening, Commerzbank announced that it has sold its Kleinwort Benson activities to the private equity investor RHJ International. These include the wealth and fiduciary management firms Channel Islands Holdings Limited and Kleinwort Benson Private Bank Limited. Their assets in wealth management as of the end of 2009 totalled GBP5.6bn (EUR6.3bn); the firms have about 600 employees.
Gartmore on 30 June announced the appointment of Charolotte Gibson as head of marketing. Gibson, previously of JP Morgan AM, will join Gartmore in mid-July. She will report to Richard Pursglove, head of UK retail. Gibson will lead a team of 12 people in charge of advertising, client relationships, and other elements of the distribution chain.
Fund Strategy reports that Old Mutual Asset Managers (Omam) has dismissed Mark Allpress, head of UK retail sales, in a reorganisation of the firm. As of 30 April this year, assets under management at Omam totalled GBP4.4bn.
Fund Strategy reports that the British financial mediation service has asked Barclays to reimburse GBP17,192 to a prudent client who was led to invest in a high-risk fund. The bank has also apologised to the client for the delay in addressing her claim. The client, Sue Murton, initally invested GBP52,000 in April 2007, in a fund (Aviva Global Balanced Income) which then changed formats and moved into the high-risk category; but the client was never informed. In response to an initial claim, Barclays offered compensation of GBP8,374, though in March 2009, the value of the client’s investment had fallen by GBP21,000.
The three asset management firms NFJ Investment Group, Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management and Oppenheimer Capital have now been merged into a single entity, which will be known as Allianz Global Investors Capital, with “unified” assets of USD48bn. Pimco will, however, retain its identity. The strategies pursued by Nicholas-Applegate and Oppenheimer will be “rebranded” as AGI Capital, while the new merged entity will retain the NFJ brand for value equities managed in Dallas, Texas. Marna Whittington and Horatio Valerias will serve as CEO and CIO of AGI Capital, respectively. The board also includes Barbara Claussen, Ben Fischer and Geoff Mullen.
The US management boutique Gramercy, a specialist in emerging markets, has announced the recruitment of Jeffrey Grills and Gunter Heiland, both formerly of JP Morgan AM, to launch new strategies focused on emerging market debt. The two new recruits, who previously were co-heads of the emerging markets team at JP Morgan AM, and who managed as much as USD12bn, yesterday launched three funds focused on emerging markets. The first of these is focused on US dollar government debts in emerging markets; the second, on emerging market debt in local currencies; and the third on corporate debt from the same markets. Assets under management at Gramercy total USD2.6bn.
Morningstar France Holding on 1 July announced that it has finalised its previously announced acquisition of Seeds group, a financial investment advising and research firm specialised in French OPCVM funds. The acquisition price has not been disclosed. Seeds Finance, an affiliate of Seeds Group, provides investment advising to institutional investors, management firms, and banks. In addition to investment advising, Seeds Group also operates Multiratings.com, a website providing analysis of mutual funds and financial training to independent financial advisers and institutional investors.
José Manuel Campa, Spanish secretary of state for the economy, on Monday held a meeting with “some of the main investors” in his government (banks, fund managers, and hedge funds) to explain to them “the reality of the Spanish economic situation, and to attempt to dispel the unfounded negative sentiment which is currently prevailing,” Expansión reports. On Thursday, the day after meeting the New York Times, Bloomberg, and the Financial Times in New York, he was to meet heads at Pimco, including Bill Gross, who manages the largest bond fund in the world, with USD464bn in assets. Gross has been one of the charpest critics of Spain in recent months.
Duet Asset Management, the USD2.3bn London-based alternative asset manager, is raising money for a new hedge fund to be headed by two of the world’s most senior commodities traders. The firm has hired Tony Hall, who worked at Credit Suisse-Glencore, and Arno Pilz, from UBS and Lehman Brothers, to manage the new Duet Commodities Fund.
The Spanish finance ministry has suffered a setback. The Spanish tax authorities had offered to regularise the situation of Spanish holders of 3,000 offshore accounts in Switzerland, which would have represented the largest tax amnesty in Spain since the restoration of democracy. However, according to sources familiar with the matter, Expansión reports, not a single one of the individuals concerned took the Spanish authorities up on the offer before the deadline passed on 30 June, though they had all been directly contacted by the tax authority.
La baisse de l’encours des fonds espagnols de valeurs mobilières s’est ralenti en juin à environ 0,4 milliard (à 152,7 milliards d’euros) contre 5,2 milliards en mai (lire notre article du 2 juin), mais les remboursements nets ont augmenté à 3,33 milliards contre 3,16 milliards. Selon l’association Inverco des sociétés de gestion, c’est le plus mauvais résultat depuis novembre 2008. Et, sur le premier trimestre, les sorties nettes ont représenté 11,3 milliards d’euros. D’après les calculs d’Ahorro Corporación, les rachats nets auraient même atteint 4,5 milliards d’euros, un record depuis octobre 2008.

Ce produit est confié à la filiale de gestion alternative Omega Gestión. L’objectif est de générer une performance annuelle de 9-12 % avec une volatilité ex-ante de 10 %. En investissement au minimum 35 % de l’encours dans 8 à 20 hedge funds de droit espagnol (FIL), en fonds de FIL, en fonds nourricer ou en ETF de matières premières.Ce produit à liquidité mensuelle comporte comme le prévoit la loi un plancher de souscription initiale de 50.000 euros. BBVA Patrimonios facture des frais forfaitaires de 7.512 euros par an plus une commission de 0,3 % sur l’encours.
SEB Asset Management a annoncé avoir consacré environ 20,4 millions d’euros à l’acquisition d’un immeuble commercial de 12.650 mètres carrés situé à Munich-Passing. Cet actif est affecté au fonds immobilier offert au public SEB ImmoPortfolio Target Return Fund (DE00009802314), un produit destiné aux investisseurs institutionnels et aux particuliers haut de gamme, dont il sera le 13ème immeuble dans le portefeuille allemand ; le portefeuille comprend au total 45 actifs répartis sur 12 pays.Le vendeur est MG Grundbesitz Objekt Gleisdreieck Pasing GmbH & Co. KG, filiale ad hoc du viennois UBM Realitätenentwicklung AG.
A compter du 1er juillet 2010, Frankfurt Trust, filiale de la BHF-Bank, abaisse de moitié, à 0,20 % la commission de gestion facturée pour son fonds monétaire FT AccuGeld. Cette initiative est une réaction à la persistance de taux faibles dans la zone euro, afin de permettre au fonds de demeurer un réceptacle attrayant pour les liquidités, a souligné Karl Stäcker, le directeur général.Cette modification n’altère en rien la stratégie du gérant Matthias Bayer, qui priorigse la sécurité.Par ailleurs, Frankfurt Trust a annoncé qu’elle lance deux nouvelles classes de parts pour le FT AccuGeld, à savoir une part de distribution destinée aux particuliers (DE000A0YCBQ8) et une part de capitalisation pour les investisseurs institutionnels (DE000A0YCBR6) à partir d’un apport de 250.000 euros.
Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investment GmbH a annoncé mardi soir que la valeur liquidative de son fonds immobilier offert au public P2 Value (1,37 milliard d’euros d’encours, 56 millions d’euros de liquidité nette) a été abaissée au 29 juin pour la quatrième fois depuis le 13 mai (lire nos dépêches des 14 et 28 mai ainsi que du 24 juin). Cette fois, la dépréciation est de 3,51 euros, et la valeur de la part tombe à 40,88 euros. Cette révision à la baisse est imputable pour l’essentiel à la nouvelle estimation de l’immeuble Itoche headquarter Building à Osaka (Japon).
Dans un communiqué boursier publié mercredi, le capital-investisseur allemand Arques Industrie a annoncé pour l’exercice 2009 une perte de 153 millions d’euros contre 145,7 millions pour l’année précédente. Pour un chiffre d’affaires de 3,49 milliards d’euros contre 5,5 milliards). La perte d’exploitation s’est limitée en revanche à 17,7 millions contre 111,46 millions, mais les dépréciations sur les participations ont continué de plomber le résultat.Pour janvier-mars, le chiffre d’affaires est tombé à 226,9 millions d’euros contre 1,23 milliard tandis que l’ebitda a été positif de 24 millions contre une perte de 115,5 millions et que le bénéfice net se situé à 1,03 million contre une perte de 38,5 millions.Ces résultats n’ont pas encore été certifiés, toutefois. Les comptes 2009 certifiés devraient être disponibles pour la mi-juillet 2010, ce qui permettrait de tenir l’assemblée générale fin août.
Selon Les Echos, l’arrivée d’Aabar Investments au capital d’UniCredit cause de sérieux remous en Italie. La semaine dernière, le fonds d’Abu Dhabi, lui-même détenu par le fonds souverain International Petroleum Investment Company (Ipic), a annoncé avoir acquis 4,99% de la première banque transalpine, pour un peu plus de 1,8 milliard d’euros. Il est désormais le deuxième actionnaire du groupe dirigé par Alessandro Profumo, juste derrière Mediobanca. Mais la banque d’affaires milanaise ne jouissant d’aucun droit de vote, Aabar Investments est d’ores et déjà considéré comme le plus puissant au tour de table, à égalité avec la Banque centrale de Libye.
Avec le Threadneedle Enhanced Commodities fund (TECF), le gestionnaire britannique vient de lancer un nouveau compartiment de sa sicav luxembourgeoise dont l’indice de référence est le Dow Jones UBS Commodities. C’est une version coordonnée du hedge fund Commodities Crescendo (lancé en 2008) qui ne peut ni utiliser l’effet de levier ni vendre à découvert. Il est géré de manière active par Nicholas Robin et Daniel Belchers sous la responsabilité de David Donora. L’objectif de surperformance est de 6 % par an, net de frais, avec un écart de suivi inférieur ou égal à 6 %.Le fonds est investi initialement à près d’un tiers dans des actions de sociétés du secteur de l'énergie (dont 14,3 % pour le pétrole) et à moins de 20 % chacun pour les métaux industriels et les métaux précieux, l’allocation aux céréales étant d’environ 10 %.
RWC Partners vient de recruter deux gérants obligataires de chez Threadneedle, Peter Allwright et Stuart Frost. Les deux experts des marchés obligataires vont gérer les fonds de performance absolue et les fonds en devises de RWC et surveiller le RWC Strategic Reserve fund.RWC a récemment recruté deux anciens gérants de Schroders qui a pris une participation de 49% au capital de la société de gestion britannique (cf. Newsmanagers du 23 juin).
HSBC a annoncé le regroupement de ses spécialistes au sein des activités de gestion d’actifs pour une seule marque unique. Désormais, Halbis dédié à la gestion fondamentale active, Sinopia, spécialiste de la gestion quantitative, HSBC Liquidity destiné à la gestion de trésorerie et HSBC Multimanager représentant l’activité multigestionnaire seront regroupés et commercialisés sous la marque HSBC Global Asset Management. Chacun conservera sa philosophie d’investissement et son processus de gestion propres sous cette seule marque, précise l'établissement, qui note que HSBC Global Asset Management gèrait 427,3 milliards de dollars, au 31 décembre 2009.
Paul Ilott, qui dirigeait la communication du pôle multigestion chez Fidelirty International, vient de lancer un institut de recherche sur la multigestion, selon Money Marketing. Selon Paul Ilott, la sophistication croissante de la multigestion a créé une demande spécifique pour ce type de fonds.Scopic Research fournira de l’information et des notations sur les fonds de multigestion et pourra aussi exécuter des «due diligences» ou proposer du conseil à la demande.
Altarea Cogedim a annoncé le 30 juin avoir signé le même jour l’acte de vente au fonds immobilier ouvert allemand Deka-ImmobilienEuropa du 39-41 avenue de Wagram, comprenant l’hôtel Marriott Renaissance Paris Arc de Triomphe 5 étoiles de 118 chambres et suites, la Salle Wagram entièrement restaurée, 3 magasins dédiés à la décoration de la maison, pour un montant de 113,8 millions d’euros. Le prix moyen unitaire de vente par chambre est de 620 000 euros.L’exploitation de l’hôtel continuera d’être assurée par Marriott. Quant à la salle Wagram, Eurosites en assurera la gestion et l’exploitation.Les actifs du fonds ouvert allemand s’inscrivaient à 10,83 milliards d’euros au 31 mai dernier.
