Selon L’Echo, Apple fascine les hedge funds. Selon un classement établi par Goldman Sachs sur base des positions de ces fonds enregistrées à la Securities Exchange Commission, l’action arrive loin devant les autres. Pas moins de 67 hedge funds détiennent le titre parmi leurs dix positions les plus importantes. Dans la liste, on retrouve aussi Pfizer, Bank of America , Google et JPMorgan.
Selon la Tribune, BNP Paribas ferme ses bureaux dans les paradis fiscaux. Fin décembre 2009, sa structure de banque de financement au Panama a été cédée à la banque canadienne Scotiabank. Actuellement, elle ferme sa banque privée, l’autre activité qu’elle exerce au Panama. Par ailleurs, BNP Paribas est actuellement en cours de négociation pour sortir aussi des Bahamas. Elle y fermera son activité de banque privée, précise le quotidien, même si les Bahamas ont signé mercredi les dix-huit accords d'échange d’informations fiscales avec l’OCDE qui les a retirés de sa « liste grise ». Egalement présente, la Société Générale ne s’en retirera pas pour cette raison.
L’assureur et gestionnaire d’actifs d’origine sud-africaine Old Mutual a indiqué à l’occasion de la publication de ses résultats préliminaires qu’il envisageait une introduction en Bourse partielle de ses activités de gestion d’actifs aux Etats-Unis. Les actifs sous gestion américains affichaient au 31 décembre dernier une progression de 9% à 261 milliards de dollars.Le groupe étudie par ailleurs la possibilité de céder ses activités d’assurance vie outre-Atlantique afin de réduire son exposition aux Etats-Unis. Plus généralement, Old Mutual a mis en œuvre un programme de réduction des coûts, avec un objectif de 100 millions de livres d'économies par an d’ici à la fin de 2012.Pour l’exercice 2009, le groupe a fait état d’un résultat d’exploitation imposable de 1,17 milliard de livres en données IFRS contre 1,13 milliard l’année précédente. Un dividende de 1,5 p par action sera proposé à l’assemblée générale des actionnaires du 13 mai 2010.
Dans le cadre de l’acquisition par Invesco de Van Kampen, qui loge les activités de gestion d’actifs retail de Morgan Stanley, les responsables (board of trustees, directors) de quelque 90 fonds de Van Kampen et Morgan Stanley ont approuvé un série de propositions de fusions qui seront soumises à l’approbation des actionnaires à l’occasion de plusieurs assemblées qui se tiendront le 11 mai prochain.
Pierre-Henri Flamand, qui gère le plus gros hedge fund interne de Goldman Sachs Group (Goldman Sachs Principal Strategies), va quitter la société pour créer son propre hedge fund, rapporte le Wall Street Journal, citant un porte-parole à Londres.
EFG Capital, la principale filiale d’EFG International en charge de la gestion de fortune aux Etats-Unis, a annoncé le 11 mars qu’elle s’installait à Key Biscayne, en Floride. La nouvelle équipe collaborera étroitement avec le bureau principal d’EFG Capital à Miami. EFG Capital est déjà présent à New York et à Los Angeles. Le nombre d’employés aux Etats-Unis s’élève désormais à 145, en hausse de 65% depuis 2007.Le bureau de Key Biscayne sera géré par Mario E. Fernández. Celui-ci possède plus de vingt ans d’expérience dans les services financiers et des connaissances étendues en matière de conseil à des familles internationales. Il sera assisté par un groupe de gérants de fortune qui comprend Alexandra Rumie, Jeanette Barker, Henry De Valle et María Luisa De Jesús, et qui se concentrera sur les services de gestion de patrimoine, de portefeuille et de risques, la planification immobilière et la structuration du patrimoine.
Selon Les Echos, l’opérateur de la plus grande place d’outre-Atlantique de négociation d’options, le Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), va abandonner définitivement d’ici à l'été son statut d’entreprise mutualisée en introduisant en Bourse ses actions. CBOE Holdings va devenir ainsi la cible d’une potentielle consolidation.
Ancien US head of distribution de DWS Investments (lire notre dépêche du 28 août 2009), Philipp Hensler va rejoindre au 1er avril Oppenheimer Funds comme head of distribution en remplacement de Bill Carey qui n'était arrivé que début septembre de chez Bank of America (lire notre dépêche du 7 septembre) et qui a quitté l’entreprise fin janvier.
Chris Thompson, qui était head of investment product management chez Putnam Investments, va rejoindre Columbia Management la semaine prochaine en tant que head of product management, rapporte Mutual Fund Wire. L’impétrant sera subordonné à Mike Jones, president de Columbia.
Pour croître à l’étranger, Azimut a choisi la formule de la joint venture. Ainsi, la société de gestion italienne se dit prête à financer des start up fondées par des gérants d’un pays donné dont elle rachèterait la totalité du capital trois à cinq ans après la création, rapporte Il Sole – 24 Ore. Azimut a déjà noué des contacts en Chine dans cette perspective, mais s’intéresse aussi à l’Inde, à l’Amérique du Sud et à l’Europe de l’Est. L’un des objectifs de la société est de doubler ses encours dans les 5 prochaines années (13,9 milliards d’euros à fin 2009).
En février, les investisseurs institutionnels ont retiré en net 230 millions d’euros des ETF du BBVA. Cela représente selon Expansión 22,5 % de l’encours. Presque la totalité de ces remboursements ont concerné le Acción FTSE Leitex Top ETF, à cause de la «fuite» de quelques clients institutionnels mexicains : un changement réglementaire au Mexique est à l’origine de ce phénomène, les clients se reportant sur des produits avec une plus forte exposition au Brésil.Le BBVA, dont l’encours des huit ETF se situait fin février à 800 millions d’euros, envisage de lancer d’autres produits de ce type pour inverser la tendance et attirer à nouveau les investisseurs mexicains. Il est aussi prévu de renforcer la gamme avec des ETF obligataires, de matières premières et de produits inversés, afin de faire face à la concurrence des promoteurs étrangers qui ne vont pas tarder à arriver en Espagne.
Le fonds d’infrastructures Morgan Stanley Infrastructure, qui a annoncé en décembre l’acquisition des actifs de Gas Natural à Madrid pour 800 millions d’euros, doit normalement revendre pour 100 millions d’euros les activités de commercialisation au portugais Galp. Il lui restera le réseau de gazoducs desservant un demi-million de ménages madrilènes. Expansión rapporte que, pour gérer cette activité, Morgan Stanley a choisi comme président Pedro Mielgo, qui a été patron de REE et comme administrateur délégué Alejandro Lafarga, ex directeur de Software AG pour la Péninsule ibérique. Cette structure de gouvernance va faciliter l’entrée de partenaires dans le capital de Gas Madrid : des fonds de pension (comme TexasPERS), des assureurs et des investisseurs en infrastructures (comme Pantheon Ventures) sont déjà sur les rangs pour prendre des participations.
Le luxembourgeois EFA, spécialiste des métiers de l’administration, a indiqué le 11 mars qu’il avait remporté un nouveau mandat d’administration pour un fonds de microfinance, le «Luxembourg Microfinance and Development Fund». EFA administre désormais huit compartiments microfinance valorisés à plus de 40 millions d’euros. EFA gère plus de 2.500 fonds pour un total de quelque 80 milliards d’euros d’actifs et pour le compte de plus de 200 clients.
Selon Fund Strategy, Lowes Wealth Management (LWM) vient de créer une structure dédiée à la distribution en coopération avec le spécialiste des services financiers John Walls avec l’objectif de commercialiser ses fonds au Royaume-Uni.LWM Distribution ne commercialisera dans un premier temps que le East-West Value Fund ainsi que les Future LVM value funds.
Le London Stock Exchange vient d’annoncer le lancement par UBS de 69 ETC. Il s’agit de la première grande introduction de ces produits en Europe hors Suisse. Cette série d’ETC réplique la performance de l’indice UBS Bloomberg Constant Maturity Commodity (CMCI). Ces dernières semaines, deux fournisseurs d’ETF, Osmosis Capital et Marshall Wace Indices, ont également lancé leurs produits à la Bourse de Londres.
HSBC Private Bank Suisse a annoncé mercredi avoir été victime d’un «sérieux vol de données» affectant 15.000 comptes en Suisse, mais elle pense que ces données «n’ont pas permis et ne permettront pas» à des tiers d’accéder aux comptes de clients. «C’est aujourd’hui qu’apparaît la vraie amplitude du vol de données de clients réalisé par Hervé Falciani en octobre 2006. L’informaticien français a dérobé des informations relatives à 15.000 clients existants et à 9000 anciens, en tout 24.000», a précisé Alexandre Zeller, directeur général de HSBC Private Bank (Suisse), lors d’une conférence de presse à Genève, indique Le Temps.Bloomberg rapporte que tous les comptes concernés avaient été ouverts avant octobre 2006.La banque a aussi indiqué que ses clients ont retiré l’an dernier 4,1 milliards de francs suisses généralement pour les déposer dans d’autres établissements offrant une meilleure rémunération.
The Scottish management firm Martin Currie on Wednesday launched its China Fund, an OEIC vehicle managed by James Chong and focused on Hong Kong, as planned. The product, with 40-60 positions, will use the MSCI Zhong Hua index as its benchmark. Front-end fee and management commission are set at 5% and 1.5%, respectively, while management fees for institutional (B) class shares are 1%. Though the manager is based in Edinburgh, a team of 13 people based in Shanghai are at his disposal.
Deutsche Börse has announced that 13 ETF funds with the Xmtch (Credit Suisse) brand were on Wednesday admitted to trading on the XTF segment of its Xetra electronic platform. The new additions bring the total number of Xmtch funds traded in Frankfurt to 30, and the total number of ETF funds on the XTF segment to 589. The launch and first listing of these products took place in January on the Swiss market SIX. Of the 13 newly-created funds, seven are denominated in Euros, four in US dollars, and two in pounds Sterling. Credit Suisse is planning to further extend its ETF product range, in a product category in which it currently manages about CHF10bn in assets. Saxo Bank (EUR5.4bn in assets) has decided to extend its activities to real estate investments, and to this end has founded a dedicated affiliate, Saco Properties, which will offer closed real estate funds to high net worth private and institutional investors. The new firm will be led by Jasper Dambord as CEO, and Claus Klostermann as managing director, and will feature some of the best-known managers in Demark on its management team. Property management will be handled by flemming Schandorff, former COO of ISS and one of the top global actors in facility service.
The Cologne-based wealth maangement firm Meridio has opened subscriptions to a Sharia-compliant diversified fund, Meridio Global Islamic Multi Asset Fonds, for an initial period from 10-19 March. The Luxembourg-registered, actively managed product will be launched on 24 March. It will invest worldwide in equities and sukuks, and will be overseen by an ethical committee composed of three well-known specialists in Islamic law. The fund will offer daily liquidity, and will be managed by Rashad Khourshid, head of private banking at the Federbank of Libanon and manager of the Meridio ArabWorld Fund, and Antoine Salamé, founder of Optimum Invest Libanon and head of trading at Middle East Capital Group Libanon. Meridio estimates the potential market for Islamic financial products in Germany at about EUR1.2bn per year. Eagle Asset Management, an affiliate of Raymond James, has announced plans to liquidate its two money market funds, Eagle Money Market Fund (USD.156bn) and Eagle Municipal Money Market Fund (USD1.24bn) on 27 August. Shareholders will vote on the measure in an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on 12 August, but from 1 May, JPMorgan Asset Management (JPMAM) will offer special “Eagle” share classes in its JPMorgan Prime Money Market Fund and JP Morgan Tax Free Money Market Fund, which will allow Eagle shareholders to transfer their assets to these well-known products. Eagle Cash Trust estimates that it is impossible to continue operating these funds in an economically viable manner, due to the volume of expected redemptions and the fact that the fee ratio for the funds would not remain competitive. In addition, Eagle states that “an intermediary whose clients hold a substantial majority of shares” (which may be Raymond James) has advised Eagle that it will no longer offer shares in the fund for sale after 9 July, and will instead offer the “Eagle Class” shares in the two JPMorgan funds.
Dreyfus Corp on 4 March obtained a sales license from the SEC for the Dreyfus Dynamic Alternatives Fund, a mutual fund which aims to generate performance equal to or higher than that of a diversified portfolio of hedge funds belonging to the HFRI Weighted Composite index. Front-end fees total 5.75%, and net fees total 1.45%. There will be a 2% penalty for early withdrawal within the first 60 days.
On Tuesday, Claymore Securities announced the launch of three ETF funds replicating indices from Wilshire Associates: the Wilshire 5000 Total Market (acronym on NYSE Arca: WFVK); the Wilshire 4500 Completon (WXSP), and the Wilshire US REIT (WREI).Fees for the Wilshire 5000 Total market fund are 0.12% while for the Wilshire 45000 Completion, fees total 0.18%. The Wilshire US REIT charges 0.32%.
To respond to strong growth in demand on the part of investors for the fund, Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management announced on Tuesday, 9 October that it has converted the Europe Rendement Flexible fund into a UCITS III fund. The OPCVM fund, founded on 30 January 2009, aims to allow investors a gradual return to the European equities markets with reduced volatility, adjusting the exposure to equities (from 20% to 80%), through a flexible, tactical allocation.
On the occasion of the publication of unaudited 2009 results for F&C Asset Management, CEO Alain Grisay announced plans to increase the size and strengthen the capacity of the management firm he leads in the area of products and distribution, both organically and through acquisitions. He firm has also confirmed that it will remain in the running to acquire C-Quadrat, a management firm based in Vienna. In 2009, F&C AM saw a slight decrease in its assets, from GBP98.6bn as of the end of December 2008 to GBP97.8bn as of the end of 2009. Net revenues declines to GBP225.1m from GBP229.9m one year earlier. Operating profits were also down, from GBP60.7m to GBP51.8m.
Société Générale Cross-Asset Research no Tuesday, 9 March announced the recruitment for its fixed income and currency strategy in London of Mark Capleton, who becomes head of Sterling fixed income strategy and global inflation, and Valentin Marinov as senior currency strategist. He will primarily cover G10 currency markets. Capleton was previously head of European fixed income strategy at RBS, while Marinov was senior currencies strategist at Commerzbank. Both will report to Vincent Chaigneau, head of fixed income and currency strategies, according to a statement from the firm.
After the best year in its history, the hedge fund management firm Vega, which had assets as of the end of December of about USD400m, has decided to reopen its three funds Vega Global (USD123m), Vega Select Opportunities (USD94.5m) and Vega Credit Opportunities (USD14m) to subscriptions, Expansión reports. According to sources familiar with the matter, the manager, Ravi Mehra, will not accept subscriptions from US investors. Vega, which also manages USD150m in mandates, had USD12bn in assets in 2004. Due to difficulties related to this excessive volume and the departure of some managers, Vega converted itself into a family office in 2007 and 2008, for its two managers, Mehra and Jesús Saá Requejo.
On the basis of 76% of the usual sample, the Credit Suisse/Tremont hedge fund index is up 0.87% in February, following gains of .17% in January. The best monthly results were for managed futures, with gains of 2.01%, following losses of 3.81% in January, while the heaviest losses were for dedicated short bias, with 4.18%. For the first half of the year, distressed shows the best performance, with 2.42%, while the worst performer was, unsurprisingly, dedicated short bias, with losses of 3.92%.
