For second quarter, Bank of America (BofA) on Friday declared net profits of USD3.12bn, compared with USD3.18bn in first quarter and USD3.22bn for the corresponding period of last year. In total, net profits for first half total USD6.3bn, compared with USD7.47bn for January-June 2009. For asset and wealth management worldwide, assets as of the end of June totalled USD603.3bn, compared with USD750.7bn at the end of March, and USD705.2bn one year earlier. Net profits for these activities totalled USD356m, compared with USD461m in January-March, and USD396m in second quarter 2009. In January-June 2010, net profits totalled USD817m, compared with USD890m in January-June 2009. BofA explains that the decline in profits compared with second quarter 2009 is due to the fiscal impact of the sale of long term funds from Columbia Management, which was partly offset by stronger activities in investment and brokerage, and by a fall in the cost of credit.
In second quarter, proceeds from private banking activities at Citigroup rose 4% to USD412m. The bank also noted that its Citi Holdings operation, which includes peripheral activities, now represents less than one quarter of assets, compared with 38% at its peak in 2008. The division posted losses of USD1.205bn in second quarter, largely due to tax-related effects, says the CEO of Citigroup, Vikram Pandit, despite the sale of USD38bn in assets during the quarter. Brokerage and asset management activities within Citi Holdings finished the quarter with proceeds of USD141m, down nearly 60% compared with the previous quarter. The group has published net profits down 37% from the same period of last year, at USD2.297bn. This result is nonetheless higher than expectations.
Mike Clark, previously president, institutional products group at Fidelity Investments, has been appointed CEO of the independent hedge fund administration firm Butterfield Fulcrum.
In first quarter, Charles Schwab Corporation on Friday announced net profits of USD205m, compared with USD6m in first quarter and an identical USD205m in April-June 2009, putting net profits for first half at USD211m, compared with USD423m in the corresponding period of last year. Results for first quarter and first half were affected by a charge of USD120m after tax due to settlement of a class action lawsuit related to the Schwab YieldPlus Fund. AUM at Schwab and the Laudus funds as of the end of June totalled USD195.4bn, compared with USD207.6bn at the end of March, and USD226.6bn one year previously, while the fund supermarket OneSource was down to USD177.2bn, from USD187.4bn three months earlier, though it represents an increase over USD129.2bn at the end of March 2009. Net subscriptions for the investment services division totalled USD1.3bn in April-June, compared with USD4.4bn in first quarter, and USD3.7bn in second quarter 2009.

The change has allowed for the performance of the reformulated fund to be compared with a wider investment universe, with more than 200 positions and about 150 issuers. The universe is composed largely of high yield bonds issued from private sector businesses with their headquarters in an OECD country. The new fund, with assets of over EUR80m, will retain the track record of the OFI Euro High Yield, which earned performance of +28.84% since its inception (from 18/04/2008 to 30/06/2010), compared with 19.12% for its new benchmark index.
