In July, Spanish managers reduced their cash allocation to 13.34%, from 18.41% in June, to increase their exposure to equities by nearly three percentage points (to 40.65%, from 37.73% previously), according to a monthly survey by Lipper. Sectoral allocation went largely to banks and other financial sector shares (46% of respondents were overweight in this sector in July, compared with 38% one month earlier), to the detriment of pharmaceuticals and utilities. The survey also finds that 31% of respondents, compared with only 15% the previous month, are planning to reduce their exposure to Euro zone bonds in the next three months. In July, allocation to bonds culminated at 42.42%, nearly its highest level ever (the record was slightly over 43% in November 2005).
At a time when more than 20 million people in Pakistan are homeless due to recent floods in the country, Mark Mobius, the emerging market expert at Franklin Templeton Asset Management, says it is a perfect time to buy Pakistani shares at a low price. The valuation of these businesses is “particularly attractive at the moment,” the manager tells Bloomberg, noting that investors on the Karachi stock exchange have massively sold off shares in the wake of the catastrophe. Mobius predicts that the floods will not have a long-term impact on the Pakistani economy, and estimates that outlooks remain attractive.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is investigating whether Christopher Pia’s trading at Moore involved market manipulation, according to a person close to the situation cited by the Wall Street Journal. Specifically, the regulators are looking into whether the hedge fund manager improperly tried to push up prices of platinum and palladium, possibly to boost Moore’s returns and his own compensation. Moore paid a USD25 million fine to settle the matter, without admitting or denying wrongdoing, but the investigation of Christopher Pia is going on.
Assets invested in shares issued by non-money market mutual funds in the Euro zone were down to EUR5.293trn as of Juen 2010, compared with EUR5.301trn in March, according to statistics from the European Central Bank. This development is the result of a decline in the average value of fund shares, which was nonetheless partially offset by net issues of shares. In the same period, assets in shares issued by money market mutual funds in the Euro zone fell from EUR1.175trn to EUR1.167trn. Net subscriptions to shares in non-money market mutual funds in the Euro zone came to EUR23bn in second quarter 2010, compared with EUR133bn in first quarter, while net subscriptions to shares in money market mutual funds were negative, at -EUR48bn. The pace of annual growth in non-money market Euro zone mutual fund share issues, calculated on the basis of transactions, came to 10% in June 2010. For money market mutual funds, the rate was -12.3% in the same period. For assets in Euro zone mutual funds (other than money market mutual funds), the annual rate of growth in shares in funds invested in assets other than equities was 10.2% in June 2010, while transactions totalled EUR3bn in second quarter. For equities and other participation assets, the corresponding annual growth rate came out at 11.7%, while transactions totalled -EUR36bn in second quarter. For shares in mutual funds, the rate came to 9.2%, and transactions totalled EUR8bn. In terms of ventilation by investment strategies, the annual growth rate in shares issued by bond funds was 11.8% in June 2010. Net subscriptions to shares issued by these funds measured EUR17bn in second quarter 2010. For equities funds, the annual growth rate was 11.9%, and net subscriptions totalled -EUR20bn. For mixed funds, the growth rate totalled 7.2%, and net subscriptions totalled EUR17bn.
The variety in the ETF segment listed on the pan-European exchanges rose by 167 new products during first half 2010 (78 during the second quarter), according to Lipper. db x-trackers launched the highest number of new funds (48) during the first half of the year, ahead of Julius Baer (24) and Amundi (19). The newly launched funds were able to gather 3.06 billion euros by the end of June 2010. Assets under management (AUM) in the pan-European exchange-traded funds (ETF) segment continued to grow over Q2 2010, gaining 1.79% to 183.24 billion euros.
Total assets under management in hedge funds grew by USD18.1 billion during July, bringing the size of the global hedge fund industry to USD1.52 trillion, according to Eurokahedge data. While performance-based gains for the month stand at USD7.7 billion as hedge funds from all regions recorded positive returns, the sector also witnessed strong positive net flows of US$10.4 billion. After witnessing two months of declines in May and June, hedge funds reverted to their winning ways in July with a string of strong performances. The Eurekahedge Hedge Fund Index gained 1.46%1 during the month. Inflows to US hedge funds crossed USD30 billion July YTD. UCITS III hedge funds attracted further inflows of USD5 billion July YTD.
Les Echos reports that the US bankruptcy judge Burton Lifland is asking the London High Court to force HSBC to release a range of documents touching on the firm’s relations with the brokerage firm controlled by Bernard Madoff, from reports to registrations and contracts, ordered by the auditor KPMG. Like the Swiss bank UBS, London-based HSBC was a depository for feeder funds supplying the former US broker’s network of frauds. The funds concerned include the Luxembourg-registered Herald and the Irish-registered Thema. Three months before the arrest of the author of frauds estimated at USD50bn, KPMG wrote reports on behalf of HSBC on the fraud and the operational risks at Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, according to the summary judgement. HSBC declined to comment on the reports to Bloomberg. A hearing is scheduled for 4 November in New York.
The US bank Goldman Sachs has filed a lawsuit against Natixis in London for failure to respect its engagements in regards to three credit default swap (CDS) contracts, the law firm Stephenson Harwood, which is representing Natixis, announced on Thursday. Reuters reports that Goldman Sachs, which has filed a suit in the High Court in London, accuses the French bank, an affiliate of the BPCE (Banque populaire - Caisse d'épargne) group, of violating an agreement in relation to three CDS, and is seeking damages and interest. The hearings are scheduled for 9 November.
Skandia Investment Group (SIG) on 18 August announced the transfer of the fixed interest investments portion of its multi-management product range, previously managed by Threadneedle, to Capital Four Management. The Nordea 1 European High Yield Bond fund, managed by Capital Four Management, will replace the Threadneedle European High Yield Bond fund in three Skandia funds, the Global Fixed Interest Blend (GBP29.7m), Bond Income (GBP61m), and Diversified (GBP313m). The changes follow a decision on the part of Threadneedle to change the benchmark index for its fund to an index which excludes financials, due to the degradation of many subordinated financial sector bonds. Skandia states that this development does not suit its investment style, insofar as the firm is of the opinion that there is still value in financials.
Selon IPE, le ministre des affaires sociales néerlandais, Hein Donner, a décidé que quatorze fonds de pension néerlandais devaient à compter du 1er janvier 2011 revoir à la baisse leurs prestations compte tenu de déficits trop importants. Le ministre avait initialement programmé une période de transition jusqu’au 1er avril 2012.Dans le sillage de la crise financière, 340 fonds de pension néerlandais sur un total de 600 ont dû présenter des programmes de redressement pour retrouver un taux de couverture de 105% dans les cinq ans. Sur les 18 fonds qui ont déjà inscrit les baisses souhaitées, 14 n’ont toutefois pas réussi à redresser suffisamment leurs finances, indique le ministre dans une lettre adressée au parlement.
Saxo Bank Asset Management, le pôle dédié à la gestion d’actifs au sein du groupe Saxo Bank, a porté ses actifs sous gestion à 28,8 milliards de couronnes danoises, soit quelque 3,90 milliards d’euros au premier semestre 2010, contre 21 milliards de couronnes précédemment. La collecte émanant de Saxo Bank A/S s’est élevée à 4,2 milliards de couronnes.Au premier semestre, le groupe a dégagé un bénéfice net de 551 millions de couronnes danoises, soit environ 74 millions d’euros, contre 41 millions précédemment.
L’allemand Universal Investment et le hedge fund américain York Asset Management ont annoncé le lancement d’un fonds Ucits de performance absolue. Il s’agira du premier fonds Ucits européen proposant une stratégie d’arbitrage international de fusions-acquisitions.Le York Lion Merger Arbitrage Liquidity Fund UI, qui réplique une stratégie de York AM, vise un rendement annualisé de 9% assorti d’une faible corrélation aux marchés actions. Le fonds sera distribué sur la plate-forme Newcits de Universal, qui compte déjà neuf fonds pour un montant sous administration de plus de 1 milliard d’euros. York AM n’en est pas à sa première initiative sur le marché des Newcits puisqu’il a déjà fait équipe avec Merrill Lynch pour le lancement en 2009 du York Event Driven, qui a dégagé un rendement de 6,5% dans sa première année. SAM, la société de gestion spécialisée dans l’investissement durable du groupe Robeco, annonce qu’elle va approfondir son partenariat avec Dow Jones Indexes, en élargissant son offre mondiale d’indices durables.Au terme de cet accord marketing, Dow Jones Indexes sera chargé du calcul, du marketing et de la distribution des indices, dont les européens, tandis que SAM continuera de s’occuper de la sélection des sociétés. Dans ce contexte, SAM a mis un terme à son partenariat avec Stoxx, qui calculait précédemment les indices européens Stoxx Sustainability.
L’analyste en chef d’Aberdeen Property devrait quitter la société à la fin de l’année, selon Das Investment.Citant le quotidien Die Welt, Das Investment indique par ailleurs qu’Aberdeen ne se prononcera pas avant la mi-octobre sur la réouverture éventuelle des deux fonds immobiliers ouverts Degi International et Degi Europa.
Le groupe suisse Swiss Life a fait état pour le premier semestre d’une hausse de son bénéfice net de 94% à 269 millions de francs suisses (quelque 200 millions d’euros) contre 139 millions de francs suisses un an plus tôt. Le volume de primes du groupe a augmenté de 20% en monnaie locale à 12,24 millions de francs.Le groupe allemand spécialisé dans le conseil financier AWD, racheté l’an dernier par Swiss Life pour 1,2 milliard d’euros, a contribué à ce résultat en renouant avec les bénéfices. AWD a dégagé un résultat opérationnel de 20,4 millions d’euros, conforme à l’objectif d’un résultat annuel compris entre 40 et 50 millions d’euros, alors qu’il avait essuyé une perte de 10,3 millions d’euros l’année précédente. Le secteur Investment Management a lui aussi amélioré son résultat, qui passe de 35 à 46 millions de francs suisses. En France, les primes se sont accrues de 18% pour atteindre 2,83 milliards de francs suisses. Toutefois, en raison de la diminution des rendements des placements, le résultat de Swiss Life en France a régressé, de 70 millions de francs à 47 millions cette année. A noter qu’au sein du secteur Activités d’assurance Autres, dont le volume des primes a quasiment doublé à 3,07 milliards de francs, les affaires internationales avec la clientèle privée fortunée ont pour la première fois généré un bénéfice.
Sherborne Investors a annoncé mercredi qu’il avait acquis 22.804.407 actions ordinaires de F&C Asset Management pour un coût total de 14,5 millions de livres, après en avoir acheté 26.556.198 la veille (lire dépêche du 18 août). La société spécialiste du redressement des entreprises double ainsi sa participation dans la société de gestion britannique à 10 %. Sherborne indique détenir désormais 41.360.605 actions ordinaires dans F&C et ajoute être exposé à 8 millions d’actions supplémentaires via un swap. L’investisseur précise qu’il est susceptible d’acquérir d’autres actions F&C mais qu’il ne dépassera pas un niveau qui l’obligerait à racheter la totalité du capital.
Impax Asset Management ferme son fonds IFSL environmental leaders, basé au Royaume-Uni, compte tenu de sa petite taille (7,6 millions de livres), rapporte Money Marketing. La société de gestion a été choisie pour gérer le fonds éthique Skandia Investment Management, dont le processus est quasiment identique au fonds fermé.
Jonathan Pitkänen va rejoindre le britannique Threadneedle en qualité de responsable de la recherche investment grade. Skandia Investment Group (SIG) a annoncé le 18 août le transfert, au sein de son offre de multigestion, d’investissements (ses «fixed interest investments») gérés jusqu’ici par Threadneedle à Capital Four Management.C’est le Nordea 1 European High Yield Bond géré par Capital Four Management qui remplace le Threadneedle European High Yield Bond au sein de trois fonds de Skandia, le Global Fixed Interest Blend (29,7 millions de livres), le Bond Income (61 millions de livres) et le Diversified (313 millions de livres).Cette modification fait suite à la décision de Threadneedle de changer l’indice de référence de son fonds en faveur d’un indice hors financières compte tenu de la dégradation dans la catégorie high yield de nombreuses obligations financières subordonnées. Skandia indique que cette évolution ne convient pas à son style d’investissement dans la mesure où la société estime qu’il y a encore de la valeur dans les financières.
Andrew Formica, le directeur général de Henderson, a déclaré que la société de gestion envisageait des acquisitions ciblées en Amérique du Nord, après l’échec du rachat de la division gestion d’actifs RidgeWorth de Sun Trust, rapporte le Financial Times. En revanche, il a balayé l’idée d’une acquisition au Royaume-Uni. Henderson avait été cité comme acquéreur potentiel de Gartmore.
Au premier semestre 2010, Henderson a accusé des rachats nets de 1,3 milliard de livres. Ses produits plus fortement margés, qui représentent désormais 59 % des encours de la société de gestion, ont enregistré des souscriptions nettes de 1 milliard de livres. Mais elles ont été contrebalancées par des sorties nettes de 0,7 milliard sur les produits à faibles marges et de 1,6 milliard de la part du groupe Pearl.Dans ce contexte, et compte tenu de la baisse des marchés actions, les encours sous gestion de la société ont reculé de 3 % par rapport à fin 2009 à 56,4 milliards de livres au 30 juin. Néanmoins, Henderson a publié un bénéfice sous-jacent avant impôts de 48,5 millions de livres, en hausse de 79 % sur un an. Le bénéfice avant impôts est ressorti à 41,6 millions de livres, contre une perte de 2,9 milliards au premier semestre 2009. Henderson souligne que sa marge d’exploitation a augmenté de 16 % à 29,1 % grâce notamment aux bénéfices de l’acquisition de New Star.
Stanley Druckenmiller, le gérant de hedge fund qui avait joué un rôle clé dans l’attaque de George Soros contre la livre en 1992, a annoncé mercredi qu’il cessait ses activités, se disant déçu de sa performance cette année, selon le Financial Times. Dans une lettre aux investisseurs, il indique qu’il ferme son fonds Duquesne Capital Management, qui représente 12 milliards de dollars selon le Wall Street Journal, après 30 ans d’exercice.
Les résultats financiers des sociétés de gestion américaines au titre du deuxième trimestre montrent qu’elles sortent de la crise, selon le Wall Street Journal. Les revenus des 13 sociétés de gestion cotées couvertes par Keefe Bruyette & Woods ont augmenté de 18 % en moyenne sur le deuxième trimestre par rapport à la période correspondante de l’année dernière, tandis que le bénéfice par action a bondi de 43 %. Les encours sous gestion sont en hausse de 22 %.
Selon Le Temps, l’état des provisions pour risque juridique d’UBS à fin juin 2010 ne montre pas une tendance haussière, contrairement à ce que prétend l’hebdomadaire Handelszeitung dans sa dernière édition.Exposée essentiellement à des plaintes de clients concernant des fonds Madoff et des CDO, soit des produits dérivés sur l’immobilier titrisé, UBS a vu ses provisions diminuer depuis l’année dernière. De 1 milliard au 31 décembre 2009, elles sont passées à 822 millions de francs trois mois plus tard, note le quotidien belge.
The head analyst at Aberdeen Property will be leaving the firm at the end of the year, according to Das Investment. Das Investment reports, citing the newspaper Die Welt, that Aberdeen will not announce a decision until mid-October as to the potential reopening of two open-ended real estate funds, Degi International and Degi Europa.
SAM, the investment boutique focused on Sustainability Investing, member of Robeco, is to deepen its successful eleven-year-old collaboration with Dow Jones Indexes by expanding its worldwide Sustainability Index offering. Under this joint marketing agreement, Dow Jones Indexes will be responsible for calculation, marketing and distribution of the indexes including the European indexes, while SAM remains responsible for the component selections. As a result, SAM’s collaboration with STOXX Ltd., which had previously calculated the European STOXX Sustainability Indexes, has been terminated.
Saxo Bank Asset Management, the asset management unit of the Saxo Bank group, has increased its assets under management to DKK28.8bn, or about EUR3.9bn, as of first half 2010, from DKK21bn previously. Inflows emanating from Saxo Bank A/S totalled DKK4.2bn. In first half, the group earned net profits of DKK551m, or about EUR74m, compared with EUR41m previously.
The S&P 500 performance greatly benefited the equity-oriented strategies. First and foremost, both the Long/Short Equity (+2.13%) and Event Driven (+1.83%) strategies returned to profitability, according to Edhec-Risk Institute. Favourably impacted by the remarkable returns of convertible bonds and the renewed rise (+1.15%) in the credit spread, the Convertible Arbitrage strategy registered a significant return (+2.32%). Overall, almost all hedge-fund strategies scored positively and, in such a favorable context, the Fund of Funds strategy exhibited a solid profit (+0.77%).
In the first half of 2010, Henderson generated higher margin net inflows of GBP1.0bn, offset by lower margin outflows from Cash funds (GBP0.2bn), NSIM (GBP0.5bn) and Pearl (GBP1.6bn). Total AUM at 30 June 2010 were GBP56.4bn, GBP1.7bn or 3% below AUM at 31 December 2009, whilst the FTSE 100 closed 9% lower at 30 June 2010 than at 31 December 2009. Underlying profit before tax has increased 79% to GBP48.5m in 1H10. Operating margin increased by 16% to 29.1% in 1H10, due to higher market levels, the benefits of the New Star acquisition in April 2009 and continued cost control.
Responsible Investor reports that Hermes Fund Managers, the management firm responsible owned by the BT pension fund and which manages part of its assets, has founded a new management firm entitled Hermes Asset Ownership Services. The foundation of the firm comes in the wake of the publication of the new UK Stewardship Code in early July, which encourages institutional investors to monitor the firms in which they own stakes more closely. The new entity, which was registered as a business on 11 August this year, will be headquartered in the Hermes offices in London. Hermes has not stated what role and missions the entity will serve alongside the unit dedicated to institutional investors, Hermes Equity Ownership Services.
