Le taux de couverture des fonds de pension américains a diminué de 2,7 points de pourcentage au mois de décembre pour s'établir à 72,4%, selon les statistiques communiquées par BNY Mellon Asset Management.Une évolution due pour l’essentiel à un rebond significatif des engagements qui ont fait un bond de 20% l’an dernier alors que les actifs ont progressé de seulement 2,7%. Sur l’ensemble de l’année, le taux de couverture des fonds de pension a ainsi perdu 12,7 points de pourcentage.
De sources concordantes, Groupama se prépare à vendre son activité de capital-investissement, rapporte L’Agefi bien qu’aucune annonce officielle n’ait été faite en interne.Groupama PE (Finama PE jusqu’en 2009) gère environ 1,8 milliard d’euros à travers 16 fonds. Le pôle regroupe trois équipes et c’est bien de son ensemble dont il est question : Acto Capital (LBO et capital-développement) et ActoMezz (dette mezzanine) pour les investissements directs dans des sociétés généralement françaises, et Quartilium, pour les fonds de fonds couvrant l’Europe et l’Amérique du Nord. Les équipes seraient plutôt favorables à des transactions séparées pour chacune d’elles (qu’il s’agisse d’une cession ou d’une prise d’indépendance). Le compte propre représentait encore 61% de ses engagements en 2010, précise le quotidien. Si l’opération concerne la société de gestion, le sort des participations de Groupama n’est pas connu.
Selon plusieurs sources concordantes, l’Etat français envisage depuis quelques semaines de nationaliser ce qui reste de l’ancien établissement franco-belge Dexia, rapporte Les Echos. Plusieurs raisons expliquent qu’il revienne ainsi sur le plan de sauvetage présenté en octobre. La dégradation de la situation financière des Etats affaiblit la qualité des garanties accordées en octobre par la France et la Belgique sur une partie des actifs.Dans ce contexte, le transfert à la Caisse des Dépôts du véhicule de refinancement de Dexia, qui porte les encours de crédit aux collectivités locales, dont 10 milliards d’euros de prêts à risque, s’avère plus lourd que prévu pour les comptes de l'établissement public et pour l’Etat français.Bruxelles est par ailleurs particulièrement réticente sur le schéma initial qui lui a été imposé, et ne donnerait son feu vert à la garantie qu’en contrepartie de l’arrêt des activités de Dexia, qui emploie encore 1.350 salariés.
Selon des informations de Reuters citées par La Tribune, Société Générale devrait prochainement restructurer son pôle de banque privée. L’agence de presse annonce notamment le départ de Daniel Truchi, directeur général de cette activité. Ce changement de management s’inscrirait dans une réorganisation plus large de la banque. Contactée par La Tribune, la banque n’a pas souhaité commenter ces informations.

Par exemple, enmatière de gouvernement d’entreprise dans les sociétés cotées, Allianz Global Investors France considère comme positif pour une société cotée que les administrateurs âgés de moins de 70 ans représentent au moins 2/3 du conseil contre 65 ans dans les principes des années précédentes. Autre ajout, les honoraires de conseil des commissaires aux comptes ne doivent pas être supérieurs à 50% des honoraires d’audit lorsque cette interdiction n’est pas prévue par la loi, précise la société de gestion. Les Technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC) et les sciences de la vie sont les secteurs dans lesquels les créations d’entreprises innovantes sont les plus nombreuses, selon une étude d’Oséo portant sur une analyse de 5 500 entreprises au cours des dix dernières années. Dans le détail, «ces sociétés s’orientent en priorité vers les marchés professionnels (B to B) de biens et services et plus de la moitié visent d’emblée les marchés internationaux pour diffuser leur innovation», précise l'étude. Le capital de démarrage est de 92 000 euros en moyenne détenu au départ majoritairement par les fondateurs. Les sociétés de capital-risque prennent part à hauteur d’un tiers ; famille, banque, fonds d’amorçage et «business angels» en détiennent plus d’un quart.Toujours selon l'étude, près de 9 entreprises innovantes sur 10 sont pérennes à 5 ans alors que, d’après l’INSEE, ce taux est de 1 sur 2 pour la création dans son ensemble. Malte attire les hedge funds, rapporte un article qui sera publié dans le magazine mensuel (février) Bloomberg markets. Début novembre, leur nombre domiciliés dans la petite île a dépassé la barre des 500 avec des actifs sous gestion agrégés de quelque 8 milliards d’euros, à comparer à 165 fonds pesant moins de 5 milliards d’euros en 2006, selon les statistiques de l’autorité des services financiers de Malte (MFSA). Par rapport à la fin 2010, le nombre de fonds s’est accru de presque 30% alors que les actifs affichent une augmentation de près de 15% début décembre.Outre son ensoleillement, Malte bénéficie à l'évidence de son appartenance à l’Union européenne et de la demande croissante des investisseurs pour davantage de transparence. En 2010, neuf hedge funds des Îles Vierges, sept des Îles Cayman et six du Luxembourg ont élu domicile à Malte, selon la MFSA. Cela dit, concernant le Luxembourg, le phénomène reste très marginal : on dénombre en effet plus de 700 hedge funds et fonds de hedge funds installés dans le Grand Duché pour des actifs sous gestion de plus de 143 milliards d’euros. En outre, au moins une douzaine de hedge funds ou de fonds de hedge funds britanniques ont déménagé une partie de leurs activités à Malte, entre autres Clive Capital dont les actifs sous gestion s'élèvent à environ 4 milliards de dollars, Comac Capital (5,2 milliards de dollars) ou encore Liongate Capital Management (2,8 milliards de dollars).
La Banque Cantonale de Zurich (BCZ ou ZKB en allemand) se sépare des clients domiciliés aux Etats-Unis qui disposaient d’un compte auprès de l'établissement, rapporte L’Agefi suisse.Elle les a informés par lettre à la fin décembre, confirmant hier une information publiée par le quotidien Tages-Anzeiger. La pression exercée depuis les Etats-Unis sur les banques étrangères rend les risques trop élevés, selon Urs Ackermann, porte-parole de la banque. Il n’a pas voulu préciser le nombre de clients concernés, qui comprennent selon lui de nombreux émigrés suisses.Actuellement, la BCZ est à l’instar de dix autres banques suisses dans le collimateur des Etats-Unis, qui traquent la soustraction et la fraude fiscale. Les établissements visés ont été sommés de livrer des données à la justice américaine.
Deutsche Bank a invité les acquéreurs potentiels de son activité de gestion d’actifs à présenter des offres initiales d’ici à la fin de cette semaine, selon le Wall Street Journal qui cite des personnes proches du dossier. Ces offres «indicatives» permettront à la banque allemande de jauger qui sont les candidats au rachat et le prix qu’ils sont prêts à payer, de façon à prendre une décision définitive, dans les prochaines semaines, sur la vente ou non de l’activité. Les offres indicatives sont souvent non contraignantes.
Les fonds de pension ont dégagé un rendement moyen de 3% en 2011, selon les estimations préliminaires pour le WM UK Defined Benefit Pension Fund Universe et le WM UK Charity Fund Universe communiquées par State Street.Les fonds de pension qui ont réduit leur exposition au risque et qui affichent une exposition importante aux obligations devraient enregistrer une performance supérieure à 3%. La majorité des fonds devrait toutefois afficher des performances négatives en raison de la domination des actions dans leur allocation. La part des actions dans les portefeuilles a diminué de 6% mais représente encore 44% du total, la part de l’obligataire passant de 34% à 39%. Les estimations indiquent que les actions britanniques, la composante la plus importante de la plupart des fonds, ont reculé de 3% sur l’ensemble de l’année, soit un peu mieux que l’indice FTSE All Share. Les actions internationales, qui représentent un peu moins de 25% d’un portefeuille moyen, affichent des résultats mitigés pour l’investisseur britannique. Si l’Amérique du Nord marque un gain de 1%, le Japon et les marchés développés de la zone Pacifique ont chuté de 12%. Et l’Europe et les marchés émergents ont perdu respectivement 14% et 17%.

According to Feri EuroRating Services, only 253 of the 727 funds on sale in Germany in the “absolute return” category have posted a positive result for the past six months, meaning that barely 35% of these funds managed to fulfil their promise of absolute returns, Handelsblatt reports. Moreover, of these funds, 97 have lost money over the past one or three-year period.

The Cantonal bank of Zurich (BCZ) is discontinuing its services to clients domiciled in the United States who have an account with the bank, Agefi Switzerland reports. The bank informed the clients by letter in late December, and yesterday confirmed reports to this effect in the newspaper Tages-Anzeiger. Pressure by the United States government on foreign banks has made the undertaking too risky, says Urs Ackermann, a spokesman for the bank. Ackermann did not wish to disclose the number of clients affected, but says that they include a number of Swiss expatriates. Currently, BCZ and ten other banks are being targeted by the United States, which is cracking down on tax evasion. The banks targeted have been summoned to disclose information to US prosecutors.
After nearly four years, the private equity investor Blackstone has now raised slightly over USD16bn for its new private equity fund, and has decided to close the fund to new commitments, the Börsen-Zeitung reports. The volume of the fund is far lower than for the previous fund, which was launched during the credit boom, and which attracted USD21.7bn.
Pension funds have earned average returns of 3% in 2011, according to preliminary estimates for the WM UK Defined Benefit Pension Fund Universe and the WM UK Charity Fund Universe, reported by State Street.Pension funds which reduced their exposure to risk and have a large exposure to bonds are expected to earn over 3%. The majority of funds will nonetheless earn negative returns, due to the dominance of equities in their allocations. The proportion of equities in portfolios has fallen by 6%, but still represents 44% of the total, while bonds have increased from 34% to 39%.Estimates find that British equities, the largest component of most funds, lost 3% for the year as a whole, slightly better than the FTSE All Share index.International equities, which represent slightly under 25% of the average portfolio, have earned mediocre returns for British investors. Although North America shows a gain of 1%, Japan and developed markets of the Pacific region have lost 12%. Europe and emerging markets have lost 14% and 17%, respectively.
Alliance Trust on 5 January announced the appointment of Karin Forseke as non-executive chairwoman, replacing Lesley Knox, who will be leaving the position on 2 April this year. Forseke will join the board at the firm on 1 March, and will become its chair on 2 April 2012. Forseke currently holds several positions as non-executive chairwoman, including one position as deputy chairman and senior independent director at the British Financial Services Authority (FSA).
The Italian asset management firm Azimut is expecting to post net inflows for 2011 of EUR500m, with inflows of EUR147m in October and EUR124m in November, Bluerating reports. The firm’s director, Pietro Giuliani, is hoping to triple that amount in 2012. Assets at Azimut total EUR11.1bn.
Deutsche Bank is inviting potential buyers of its asset management operation to submit initial bids by the end of this week, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources familiar with the matter. These “indicative” bids will allow the German bank to gauge who the contenders are for the acquisition, and what price they are prepared to pay, in order to faciliate a final decision in the next few weeks as to whether or not to sell the activity. Indicative bids are often non-binding.
According to various sources, Groupama is about to sell its private equity operation, although no such announcement has yet been made internally, Agefi reports.Groupama PE (Finama PE till 2009) has about EUR1.8bn in AUM in 16 funds, with three teams: Acto Capital (LBO) et ActoMezz (mezzanine debt) for investments mainly in French companies and Quartilium, for funds of funds covering Europe and North America. Agefi understands that the teams would favour separate solutions for each of them.
Agefi reports that a US federal judge yesterday found that investors in feeder funds with ties to the investment company of Bernard Madoff were not entitled to claim the status of clients of the former fiancier. The verdict is a victory for Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee seeking to reclaim funds for former Madoff clients, the newspaper adds.
On Wednesday, Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee for Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, filed a lawsuit seeking the dismissal of a claim by the California attorney general, Kamala D. Harris, and other parties, seeking reimbursement of their investments with Stanley Chais, one of the largest suppliers to Bernie Madoff, the Wall Street Journal reports. The trustee is seeking to recuperate USD1.1bn of assets from the estate of Chais, his family and the companies he controlled. Chais died in September 2010.
Beatriz Herrero, head of communications for the capital markets and private banking divisions of Banco Sabadell, has been recruited for the private banking marketing team at Credit Suisse in Madrid, Funds People reports. She will join Marian Huerta on that team, and will report to Ilona Kirienko, head of marketing for the southern European region.
The small island of Malta is attracting hedge funds. In early November, the number of hedge funds domiciled in Malta topped 500, with overall assets under management of about EUR8bn, compared with 165 funds weighing less than EUR5bn in 2006, according to statistics from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), Bloomberg Markets reports in an article to appear in its February issue. Compared with the end of 2010, the number of funds increased by nearly 30%, while assets increased by nearly 15% in early December. In addition to its sunny weather, Malta also has its membership in the European Union and increasing demand for transparency on the part of investors going for it. In 2010, nine hedge funds from the Virgin Islands, seven from the Cayman Islands, and six from Luxembourg chose to domicile themselves in Malta, according to the MFSA. However, compared with Luxembourg, the phenomenon remains highly marginal: there are over 700 hedge funds and funds of hedge funds based in the Grand Duchy, with assets under management of over EUR143bn. At least 12 British hedge funds and funds of hedge funds have moved some of their activities to Malta, including Clive Capital, whose assets under management total about USD4bn, Comac Capital (USd5.2bn), and Liongate Capital Management (USD2.8bn).
The Asian-based hedge fund sector lost 0.6% in December and 8.5% over the year as a whole, compared with a decline of only 4.1% for hedge funds worldwide, according to statistics from Eurekahedge.Long/short strategies posted the worst results, with the Eurekahedge Long Short Equities index down 10.32%. CTA strategies were the best performers, with gains of 6.43%. Macro and event-driven strategies finished the year on a par with where they started it, while all other strategies show total losses of 2% to 5%.These less than mediocre results did not have a major impact on creations of new hedge funds, with 130 structures created, compared with 127 closures. In 2010, the overall balance was much more marked, however, with 183 creations and 125 closures.Net inflows last yeart totalled USD2bn, bringing assets under management to USD140bn. According to Eurekahedge, assets may reach USD140bn by the end of 2012.

The high income equity sub-fund, managed by Anu Narula, seeks opportunities in a universe of high quality equities that deliver high dividends and structural growth. The fund is global and diversified, and invests without geographical, sectoral, or market cap size constraints, a statement says. The AXA WF Framlington Global High Income fund aims to deliver dividend returns 1.5 to 2.5 times those of the MSCI AC World index, by investing in shares with high dividends with a strategy based on the use of an overlay. Vanguard is cutting the fees for some of its sectoral ETF funds, Mutual Fund Wire reports, relaying information from Seeking Alpha. The fees have been reduced to 19 basis points for the Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, Telecom, Materials, Technology, Industrials and Health Care ETFs. The Financials ETF now charges 0.23%.
Custody, accounting and administration for the ETF funds Direxion Large Cap Insider Sentiment (acronym: INSD) and All Cap Insider Sentiment (KNOW) have been contracted by Direxion Funds (Rafferty Asset Management group) to BNY Mellon Asset Servicing, which now serves 52 ETF funds from Direxion. Assets at Direxion totalled USD7.5bn as of the end of September. The asset management firm is specialised in ETF and tracker funds, either with leverage or specialised in alternative assets aimed at “sophisticated” investors and independent financial advisers.
